Auckland, January 10. The racehorses Manton, Lady Norah, aud Peter Osbeck were shipped by the Mararoa for the South to-day. The latter two proceed to fulfil engagements at Gisborne. A company has been formed to work fresh ground at Matarango goldfidds, iv Mercury Bay district, recent prospecting having yielded satisfactory results. The Hon. Mr Rit^tuison arrived last night, having made a compfcfe tour of the Northern districts, including the village settlements. The special settlers will require advances and road works from the Government for another two years before they can live on the returns from the laud. The settlers all oppose the unemployed being sent on to the land. Palmerston North, January 10. Mr Colin M'Keuzie, a well-known settler, dropped dead this morning in front of his residence at Ashurst. Wellington, January 10. The stnke at Hannah's boot factory remains in statu quo. A representative meeting of citizens was held to-night whereat the chairman (Mr Trask) made a presentation of a purse of sovereigns to Mr Levestatn, M.H.R., as a testimonial in recognition of his services. Several speakers referred to the city member and his actions in a complimentary manner. A committee has been appointed with the object of raising subscriptions to repay the expenses incurred by the Evening Mail in defending the action brought against that paper by J. T. Robinson, of Blenheim, and make good the £100 damages which the paper had to pay. Circulars were sent to every newspaper in the colony requesting a practical expression of sympathy with the paper mentioned, which merely reported an utterance at a meeting of n public body in the public interest. The Nelson comruifctee, which is a strong one, will endeavour to' make up a substantial sum. Christchurch, January 10. The Christchurch Fire Brigade has decided to send a team to compete at the firo brigade's demonstration at Invereargill. Lieutenant Smith was elected to represent the brigade at the conference. The New Zealand Primitive Methodist Conference was opened here by the Rev. J. Dumbbell, of Wellington. To-day's proceedings were formal.

Timabu, January 10. David Milne, aged 20 years, a labourer, employed .it Pareora station, camo to town for the New Year holidays, and has been missing since. His body was found to-day in a shallow creek a few miles from town, ou a roundabout road home. His watch and money were in his pockets. Deceased was a sober and quiet man.
