MORNINGTON TRAMWAY COMPANY.

TO THE EDITOH,

Sin, —Will you kindly allow tne space in which to refer to the report of the late meeting of this company. It seems to be pretty clearly shown that it costs the company over £1000 per annum to work the extension line—£lo79, in fact— upon which they collect annually iv fares £271, showing a net annual loss of £808. One of the directors stated that the Mornington Borough Council insisted upon the company continuing to run this extension line. It seems to me incredible that any corporate body would insist upon a company carrying on at such a ruinous loss as this, and I should think 'that if proper representations were made to the council permission would at once he given to the company to cease running trams on the line during the present severe depression. If, however, the council will have its pound of flesh, I would advise the directors to cease running, and let the council sue for the penalties, which would soon bring matters to an issue, when it would be very easy for the directors to protect their shareholders.—l am, kc,

"BALCLUTHA SCHOOL. . TO THE EDITOIt. : Sin, —In answer to a letter which appeared in your paper, signed "Truth," doubting the statement of " Toleration " regarding Mr Pope as a successful teacher for matriculation, "Truth" says " Toleration's " statement might have been swallowed had he furnished a few names of successful pupils. Alexander .Goodall studied under Mr Pope at Pukeuri for two and a half years; at the end of that time he went up for examination, and passed for matriculation with nonours. A. Goodall was the only pupil at Pulceuri who studied for a matriculation examination. Now, Sir, I think that if Mr Pope i 3 competent to teach one pupil to pass honourably he is able to teach any number. I have had the pleasure of knowing Mr Pope close on three jears, and I can testify that he is a gentleman and a teacher of a very high order; and I consider the Ealclutha School Committee made a very wise selection when they chose Hr Pope as their head teacher. At present Mr Pope is teaching the higher branches after school hours gratuitously.—l am, &c, One of the Piikeubi School Comiiittee, .» ■ TO THE EDITOR. Sib,—Kindly allow me space to reply briefly to the letter over the signature " Disconsolate Widow " in this morning's issue of your journal. As vulgar inunendoes invariably recoil on the heads of those who indulge in them, I shall not refer further to that part of the letter.beyond recommending " Disconsolate Widow," if again seined with " an itch for writing," to read before writing the fourth paragraph of the 7th verse and Bth chapter of St. John. Some printers' errors crept into my letter of the Gth iust., which doubtless did.make it a little mixed. If "Disconsolate Widow " will kindly substitute B2 man for board man, committeeman for committeemen, and rescinded for received, I fondly believe she, and the public also, will admit that her letter after all h the one entitled to the prize for incoherency and general (if I may com a word) mixupedness. Sir, I have "shot my bolt," and I have only to add, in conclusion, tha my letter was dictated in no carping or persona spirit, but as a member of the good old church I simply wrote rebutting certain statements that 1 consider reflected on Episcopalians, and which I knew were contrary to fact.— I am, &c, Waihola, August 10. Vestkyman.
