Haddock, btatioumaster at Johnsouville, has been convicted of embezzling the moneys of the Welliugton-Maiiawatn Railway Company, and r released on six months' probation. 1 Inspector Thompson has received a telegram I from Lower Hutt stating that James Coulters, a \ farmer at Waiwetu, was drowned while crossing Wainui-Omata river at -'.30 on Wednesday afternoon. Coulter mid his brother-in-law (.Sinclair) were crossing the river on horseback when they were washed off. Deceased attempted to save * himself by clinging to his horse's rein, but it c broke and be was drowned. Sinclair saved hima self by clinging to his horse's mane. At the inquest a verdict of "Death from natural causes" was returned. He has relatives at Nelson and in Canterbury. During the recent gale tho highest tides rev numbered were experienced at Sunnier and : I New Brighton. A house at the latter place had J the foundation piles smashed away. No lives were lost and not much damage done.
