The Telegraph department have sup- ; p'.emented the staff at Wangauui with several operators from here, mill although some delay must necessarily occur from the unfortunate break, it is expected that no serious difficulty will be experienced in working off all messages without delay. W. H. Jones (a young mc.v), a veterinary surgeon, from Hawera, has been arrested on a . charge of obtaining money under false pretences ! from W. Goupland Alexander. Haddock, btatioumaster at Johnsouville, has been convicted of embezzling the moneys of the Welliugton-Maiiawatn Railway Company, and r released on six months' probation. 1 Inspector Thompson has received a telegram I from Lower Hutt stating that James Coulters, a \ farmer at Waiwetu, was drowned while crossing Wainui-Omata river at -'.30 on Wednesday afternoon. Coulter mid his brother-in-law (.Sinclair) were crossing the river on horseback when they were washed off. Deceased attempted to save * himself by clinging to his horse's rein, but it c broke and be was drowned. Sinclair saved hima self by clinging to his horse's mane. The body r was recovered. 0 It is understood that Detective Inspector c Browne will not ba transferred to Auckland as if. at first proposed. The Nelson and Wellington Volunteers arrived in camp this morning- There are 2-10 from Nelson, and 59 from Wellington, making, with tho local men, a total of 4-1(3. Cas.% draper, formerly of Christetnirch and Auckland, and now of .Melbourne, was found dead yesterday morning in his house. Deceased lived alone, and was ie last sit n alive on Tuesday. At the inquest a verdict of "Death from natural causes" was returned. He has relatives at Nelson and in Canterbury. During the recent gale tho highest tides rev numbered were experienced at Sunnier and : I New Brighton. A house at the latter place had J the foundation piles smashed away. No lives were lost and not much damage done.
