A return of the eases heard in the Resident Magistrate's Court at Duuedin during tho year just closed contains some interesting figures. During the year 18S7 the number of plaints entered, that is cases commenced, was 3fil2,aud the total of tho amounts sued for £15,870 9s 3d. A considerable number of cases were settled out of court, and in a large proportion of these cases it is reasonable to assume that the plaintiffs were satisfied by tha payment of their claims. The unmbGr of cases heard or in which judgments wero recorded was 1793, the total amount sued for in these cases being £17,373 0s 7d ; and judgments were recovered for £15,020 7s lOd. This last item includes actions for damages as well as debt cases.
