MOVEMENTS OF THE UNION STEAM SHIP COMPANY’S FLEET.

Monday, January 9. Lyttelton—Wanaka arrived 6 a.m. from Wellington; sailed 1 p.m for Port Chalmers. Takapuna sailed 9 p.m. for Wellington. Wellington—Penguin sailed noon for Nelson. Wakatipu sailed 3 p.m. for Sydney. Te Anau sailed 3 p.m. for Lyttelton. Koranui sailed 1 p.m. for Port Chalmers. Auckland - Suva arrived 1 a.m., and Manapouri 1.30 a.m from Gisborne. ,

The steamer Hawea steamed up to Dunedin yes’ terday morning. After taking in cargo at the Rattray street wharf, she embarked her passengers and sailed in the afternoon for the Manukau, via Lyttelton and intermediate ports. The German barque Johann Carl is getting on exceedingly well with the discharge of cargo; she has put out some 200 tons, all of which is in splendid order. The barque Helen Denny is ballasting at the Rattray street wharf. The ship Turakina is putting out her cargo in splendid order; she has lauded some 800 tons nt the cross wharf. The schooner Lizzie Guy put out the last of her inward cargo yesterday; she commences to load today for the North. The ship Marlborough, now loading at Oamaru for London, has taken in some 6000 carcases of frozen mutton, 600 bales wool, and other cargo. The ketch Catlin put in at the Heads for shelter yesterday forenoon. The steamer Beautiful Star steamed down from Dunedin yesterday, after transhipping wool to the ship Nelson she returned to Dunedin to take in cargo, and sails this evening for Oamaru. The steamer Herald, coal laden from Greymouth, arrived at Port Chalmers yesterday afternoon and passed up to Dunedin. She left Greymouth at 4 pan. of the 6th inst. The s.s- Arawa, from Plymouth, via the Cape and Hobart, is expected to reach Port Chalmers on Sunday.

ARRIVAL OF TUB TONGARIRO.

The R.M.S. Tongariro. from Plymouth, via Cape Town, Hobart, Wellington, and Lyttelton, arrived off Taiaroa Heads at 1.30 a.m. yesterday, and anchored until the tide was favourable, crossing the bar at 9.15 a.m. under the charge of Pilot M'Douald, and was berthed alongside the George street pier at 10.15 a.m., and at once commenced to discharge her portion of cargo for this port, which consists of some 200 tons. The Tongariro comes into port in her usual fine order, and will remain here for about 16 days. The personnel of herofllcers is unchanged, with t he exception of Dr Sheriff (late of the R.M.S. Knikoura), who succeeds Dr Harris as surgeon. Her passage from Plymouth to Wellington, winch occupied 42 days3hr and 30mln, or steaming time 4 j days 19hr arid 24min, appears to have been a very pleasant one; all kinds of amusements in the shape of concerts, dances, athletic sports, and fancy dress balls were indulged in, and passed off very pleasantly, and we arc happy to state no casualties occurred to mar the passage, which was a fine weather one. We are indebted to Mr N. W. Burlineon, the purser, for the following report of the passage from Home:—Lelt Plymouth at 1.30 p.m. of November 19; experienced strong westerly winds and high seas across the Bay of Biscay, nhlch continued until her arrival a* M-ideira at 1 p.m. of November 23. After coaling, she resumed her voyage aS 6.30 p.m. same day, with a light N.E. breeze, which was followed by variable winds until she crossed the equator; thence she met the S.E. trades, which were light and attended by fine weather until she reached lat. 16 S; they were succeeded by strong head winds and high aea to arrival at Cape Town, at 2.10 p m. of December 9; her steaming time from Plymouth being 19 days, 17 hours, and 44 minutes. After embarking mails and passengers, she left again at 7 p.m. same day; had moderate to light westerly winds, with fine summer weather right across, and run down her easting in lat. 48 S., reaching Hobart at 9.30 a.m. of December 27, her steaming time from the Cape beinp 17d 4hrsomin; average speed, 13.78 knots, or 321 miles per day. After landing 45 passengers for Australian ports and taking on board a supply of coal she pushed on for Wellington at 4.45 p.m. same day, had light and moderate winds with fine weather, and Cape Farewell at 8 a.m. of December 31, arriving at Wellington at 5.10 p.m. same day, her average speed from Plymouth being 13.16 knots. Discharged cargo and passengers, and left again for Lyttelton at 5 p.m. of the 4th inst, arriving at that port at 6 a.m. of the sth; after landing cargo she left again at 10 a.m. of the Bth inst., had fine weather along the coast, and steamed into port as above.
