GOLD AT WAIKAWA.

TO THE EDITOR.

Bm, —I notice from your Friday's issue that gold had hccu got at Waikawa. It has long been known to sawmillers and bushnieu who have worked there that gold was to be found in D)any of tbe creeks, but owing: to the inaccessible nature of the bush and the difficulty of getting supplies of foud, the country has never been systematically prospected by experienced miners. Now that we have, got a Mines department, with an energetic head like the Hon. Mr Lnrnaeh, it would not be too much to expect that places whish are known to be auriferous, like Waikawa, should receive some attention. We do not want another Big Bay fiasco, but a subsidy to some experienced diggers to give such placesa fair trial.—l am, &c.,
