Auckland, July 18.

It is stated that several gentlemen residing here have received letters from Borsboom; arrested in Sydney for the alleged murder of his wife, asking them to give him a character, as he thinks it will be something in his favour at his approaching trial. The Albion Boarding House, in which a fire broke out yesterday morning, was insured for £400 in the United Office. The policy expired yesterday afteraoon. The .two hydromatic disappearing guns: lately procured by Government and erected at Fort Takapuua were tested on Saturday in the presence of Colonel Boddam and others, and worked with complete success. A fire at Oliphant street, Ponsonby, last night destroyed two four-roomed cottages, owned by Adams and Grovctt respectiTcly. Two adjoining cottages were badly damaged. All the I buildings were insured. The furniture of Mrs i Ortian (which was destroyed) was insured for I £80 in the New Zealand Office, and the house for £125, but it is not known in what office.

The flood relief committee met this afternoon and ordered material for filling mattresses to be procured. Great difficulty has been experienced by poor people in getting dry material to fill beds. The town clerk has fortunately found a stock. The latest flood relief contributions are from Messrs E. W. Mills and Co., Wellington, of five guineas, and tho Brunner Company's miners a second instalment of £7 10s.

To-day John Albert Searle, John Ross, and Leonard Seltars, three boys who were committed for trial last week on charges of housebreaking and arson at Gabites'shop, were committed on four charges of housebreaking at Mr Harris and Sons' (merchants), Simpson's (tobacconist), Smyth's (auction room), and Green's (bacon-curing factory).
