A POLICE RAID,

Owing to increase iv social evil through the abolition of the CD. Act, the police made a raid and arrested half-a-dozen women on charges of vagraucy. Mr J. P. King, who was on the bench, in sentencing the women to' three months' imprisonment, said that, speaking from his own observation, he had no doubt that the repeal of the act in Auckland was leading to an increase of prostitution. He also had reason to believe that in consequence of this " false, maudling.Ssentimentality " disease was spreading in Aucklaud.

FIRING A WOMAN FROM A CANNON.

Mrs Mary Steadman. Aldis, wife of Professor Aldis, has appealed to the City Council to stop the performances of Delo, the woman fired from a cannon at the City Hall. She says :— "It hardly needs to be painted, and that the pleasure derived from seeing a fellow creature in circumstances of peril is in itself degrading; and a community which tolerates such a' form of amusement can scarcely lay claim to any great amount of civilization." The mayor pointed out that the council could not interfere, as it had no power. The letter was forwarded to the superintendent of police. •:

A BISHOP IN COURT,

This morning one of the spectators and hearers in the Barrier murder case was Dr Cowie, Bishop of Auckland, who was accommodated with a seat in the portion of the court set aside for counsel. When the bishop departed he stood outside in the passage and took a long look at the two accused. Perm turned upon him his full face, and the two regarded each other for about lOsec steadily, after which Perm turned away his head, and a peculiar cynical smile playing about.his mouth as he.did so. Perm all throughout the trial has never seemed to realise his position, and to-day he has manifested the same seeming careless attitude.
