FEDERAL QUARANTINE. Melbourne, January 21 (Received January 22, at 1 a.m.)
The President of the Board of Health has written to the Government urging the establishment of a federal quarantine station.
THE SMALLPOX PATIENTS
The smallpox patients at Sorrento are progressing favourably. No fresh cases are reported.
A POSTPONEMENT. Sydney, January 21
(Received January 22, at 1 a.m.) -, The intercolonial cricket match New South Wales v. Victoria has been postponed owing to heavy rain.
THE NEWTOWN OUTRAGE.
The persons who were arrested in connection with the Newtown outrage were brought up at the Police Court to-day. The case for the prosecuticn broke down, and the prisoners were consequently discharged.

It is expected the general election will be concluded within a month from the present date.
(Received January 23, at 1 a.m.) In the Legislative Council to-day Mr Burnes, the new Colonial Treasurer, took his seat on the Government benches. The seats of Ministers were declared vacant. A deficit in the Budget of £2,500,000 has been, announced. Both Houses of Parliament granted two months' supplies. Sir Henry Parkes will explain the policy of the new Government on Monday next.
COMMERCIAL.
(Received January 21, at 10.5 p.m.) New Zealand wheat is selling at 3s 9d, and New Zealand oats at 2s 3d to 2s 5d per bushel. Maize per 561b is at 4s 6d.
