CITY COUNCIL.

The following is our report of the ordinary business transacted at the meeting of the City Council on Monday evening. . ■ COIHIESPONDENCE. : Jas. A. Park and other ratepayers wrote complaining of a nuisance caused by a fishmonger on the south side of Rattray street.—Referred to the Baths and Sanitary Committee with power to act. The Secretary of the Macintyre Testiiuouial Committee wrote regarding subscriptions in aid of a testimonial to Dr Macintyre in connection with his action in the Tiinaru poisoning case.— • Referred to the mayor with power to act. ;A letter was read from the Colonial Secretary's office intimating that Messrs Thomas: Dick, R. Glendining, and E. B. Cargill, the trustees of the Corporation of the City of Dunedin Sinking Fund, has tendered their resignations, and informing the council that the resignations had been accepted, to take effect from January I,lßß7.—Referred to the Finance Committee to report. Correspoudence was read with respect to Mrs Didham's claim, which it was resolved to defend. The Albany street School Committee wrote asking that the children attending the school might be allowed to bathe at the Pelichet Bay baths after 3.30 p.m. free of charges-Referred to Baths Committee. The Secretary of the Harbour Board wrote with referenco to a sewer at the old Stuart street wharf, stating that if the corporation were not in a position to proceed with the intercepting sewer, action would have to be taken to extend the temporary one.—Referred to Works Committee, with power to act. The Town Clerk of Mornington wrote complaining about gorse growing on the Town Belt, near Mornington.—Referred to Reserved Committee. REPORTS. The Works Committee recommended that, without admitting any liability, the sum of £10 be paid to Mr George Baker toward the cost of repairing the culvert on his property at Heriot row, which has been damaged by the recent heavy flood; that no'action be taken in the meantime regarding the state of Upper Maclaggan street referred to by Mr Buskin; that a mad tank be constructed at the junction of Athol place and St. Andrew street, and 30ft of 9in piping laid to convey the water into the sewer ■ overflow at the foot of the street; and that £12 be expended in extending the drain in Heriot row between Argyle and Pitt streets. Tho committee reported that paysheets and accounts had beeu passed for payment amounting to £090 13s sd.—The report was adopted with the exception of tho clause referring to St. Andrew street, which was referred back to the committee.

The Baths and Sanitary Committee reported having inspected the Logan's Point Baths, and recommended that the windows of the office be boarded up to within 3in of the top, a new lock placed on the door, and the floodgates repaired ; further, that applications be invited for the position of caretaker of the baths for a period of three or four jears or longer—the 'caretaker to keep the baths in thorough order according to specification and rules to bo prepared.—Heport adopted.

The Reserves Committee reported that permission had been granted to the Maori Hill Borough Council to make alterations to the road on the Town Belt leading to Maori Hill byway of Newington, and to use- the surplus material from the cuttitig in widening the continuation of the same road within the borough, under the supervision and to the approval of the city surveyor, and without expense to the city corporation.— Report adopted. The Finance Committee reported havingpassed accounts for payment, as per warrants attached, amounting to— Municipal No, 1 nccount ... £1171 4 U : Water No. 2 account,., ~, 05 810 Gas No. 3 account „. 598 1.9 Tctnl ... ... ... £1837 10 6 —The report wa3 adopted. The Water Supply Committee reported inter alia that the city surveyor had been instructed to prepare and submit at next meeting of the council plans Mid specifications and estimate of the probable cost of the work of reinstating No. 3 section of the Silverstream water-race in three divisions. They had passed for payment accounts amounting to £27 4s Id.—Report adopted.

At this stage of the proceedings Cr Carrol took his seat in the council. MOTIONS.

Cr Fisn said ho would move that the motions standing in his name be referred to the various committes to whioh they had reference. The motions were as follow: — "That it be remitted to' the Public Works Committee to report by whose authority the stone wall in the centre of Dowling street is being constructed, and why the work is being executed by day labour."—" That it be remitted

to the Public Works Committee to issue a general instruction to the pity surveyor that no city works in future be carried out by day labour, unless under the special sanction of the council, signified through the various committees."—

" That it bercinitted to the Works Committee with power to act:—The repairing of the asphalt pavements in Stafford and Walker streets where necessary."—" That in future, whea necessary, the water carts and men commence watering the principal streets not later than 6.30 a.m." — " That it be remitted to the Works Committee to inspect certain ruinous and dangerous buildings in Walker street, and order their removal if deemed desirable." —"That it be remitted to the Works Committeo with power to act:—The inspection of tho water channel on the east side of Leith street, between Union aud Dundas streets, with' a view of asphalting such portions of same as may be necessary for the preservation of the health of the residents." The motions were all carried with the exception of tho last one, which the mover agreed to withdraw, Cr Cramond having stated that the work referred to in the motion was unnecessary. On the motion of the BlAroi? it was resolved—

"That the city surveyor explain the reason for employing carting by day work, aud also day labour by corporation workmen, in connection with the Rattray street contract, also cost of same to date." °

Tenders were referred to various committees to report.
