The boat race for the challenge cup presented to the Otago Rowing Club by the directors of the Ravensbourne Baths Company took place on Saturday afternoon. A strong north-wester made the bay very rough, so that good rowing was out of the question. Tho majority of those engaged in the contest were, however, in favour of rowing it off in spite of tho roughness of the water, and so the various heats were contested, with the following results: —

A good start was effected, but owing to a collision Mills' and Dawson's crews lost all chance of winning. Tho race then resolved itself into a struggle between Matheson's and Gibson's crews, the former winning after a good race by about a length. The selection of the crews to take part in the Port Chalmers regatta on Boxing Day will he made this evening.
