His throat bore traces of having been stitched, and therefore affords grounds for the belief that he had attempted his life before. Hon. J. A. Tole, Minister of Justice, inspected Calliope dock to-day. The damage to the cartridge factory by fire does not exceed £100. At the next meeting of shareholders to be held in London of the New Zealand Land Mortgage Company (Limited), the directors will recommend a dividend at the rate of 0 per cent, for the half-year ending October, carrying forward £387, and placing £7000 to the reserve fund. At a Wesleyan district meeting it was resolved that in view of the gambling propensities which are so prevalent, the attention of our people be specially directed to the rules of our church prohibiting gambling in every form.

Chkistchubch, November 13. James Henry Roberts, brother of Johathan Roberts, convicted last session o£ forgery, has been arrested on a charge of forging the name of F. C. Murray to a cheque on the National Bank for £6 14s, and uttering it to F. Gabites, draper. Otlier similar charges are pending against him. The Hinemoa proceeded some miles northward of Godley Heads to discover a deepsea fishing ground, and to test a new trawl net which the Government have imported. Two or three hours were spent and every effort made by Captain Fairchild to find a good ground, but the only reward was two or three elephant fish and a lot of jelly fish. Pettingell refuses to box Mathews in private at Christchurch, stating that Mathews made a match for November 3 in Wellington and did not turn up. He is still willing to meet Mathews in Wellington.

Letters received from Fulljames' party, who left Southbridge to prospect Big Bay, state that no gold worth speaking of has been found, but thoy like the country very well and will prospect further inland.

The Grand division of the Sons of Temperance decided to fix the funeral donation at £30, and instructed the Executive Committee to consider the advisability of estab-" lishing a widows' and orphans' fund. The next annual meeting will be held at Kaiapoi. At the auction sale of racing stock to-day, Itepo was sold to R, Ray for 400 guineas; Cadogan—Siesta colt to G. Clifford, 105 guineas; Albany or Cadogan—No Name colt, G. G. Stead, 115 guineas; Cadogac— Doric filly, R. Mason, . 101 guineas; Apremont—Flattery filly, P. Butler, 100 guineas; St. George—Miss Flat lilly, M. Sherwin, 125 guineas.
