CLUTHA COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ordinary r^pnihly meeting of the above council was held at Balclutha on Friday last. There wore present—Mr "W. Dallas (chairmaa) and Crs Keys, Christie, Hay, Smith, JjtvLachlau, Mackenzie- aud Scott.

COTOESS-ONDI-N'CE^ The Secretary to the Treasury advised remittynces to the county account of £20 14s 8d and £13 Os 8(1, payments on account of hind disposed of on deferred payments; also, a remittance of £'•112 Is, being balance of subsidy due nnder " The Local Bodies' Finance and Powera Act 1885." Mr H. Heckk-r wrote suggesting that the bridge over tfca Kaihiku stream ou the Hillfoot road lihoukl bo staged.it being very slippery and dangerous for horses crossing. He also pointed out that Mosley's road was in a disgraceful state, and could be much iropyoyed by a few days of a surfacem;n\ to clean out the water-channels.-^Ths engineer was instructed to attend io these matters. William Moir, keeper of the Clydevale punt, forwarded a schedule of charges at the punt. A pelition was received, signed by 10 settlers of Puerua, praying the council that several portions of tho Puerua road from its junction with the Port Molyneux road tn Mr Alexander Allison's property be forthwith metalled, and especially that portion between Mr William Morton's property and WiUowmeade.—Prayer of petition to be granted so soon as tbe council ia in funds,

Roberts wrote asking the council to take steps to close a road lino running through his property at Waipahi, which road could only be used hy himself.—Tho council to tako the necessary steps on Mr Roberts agreeing to pay tho cost. HOARS AND WORKS. The Engineer reported that Messrs HiU and M'Nut had placed a footbridge over the Owako stream adjoining Messrs Hill and Greens properties. He suggested that in future when the council voted n sum of monoy to assist ineiinyhis out works a specification bo required for the works proposed to hu done. Tho bridge over the Wairuna creek on Cliuton-Waipahi road had been planked anew. Some of tho bridges in tho Kaihiku district required repairs. It was necessary, where thoy were so many bridges, to keep a supply of planking ou hand During tho past month but little progress had been made with the works under contract. The report was adopted. Tho report of tbo Finance Committee recommending payment of tho monthly pay sheet, amounting to £110 5s 2d, was adopted. Tho committee appointed for the purpose ot supplying settlers with poisoned grain lor the1 destruction of small birds reported they had tried an experiment with rape seed and strychnine, but it was found the birds would not tako the seed. Tho committee had arranged for sending a supply of poisoned crushed wheat to various depots throughout tho county tor distribution amongst tho Bottlers.—Action ap-

proved. , ,„, , The following motions were passed:—that tho necessary steps be taken so that the council may at its next meeting declare a rate ot Jd m the pound on the capital value of all the rateable property within tho county. That tho decision of a meetiug of ratepayers to close a road m Clydevale riding be confirmed. Ihat the engineer be instructed to put in a culvert on tho road known as Motion's road, on Merry creek, opposite Mr T. E. Steele's property. That tho engineer be empowered to expend the £40 voted by resolution on May 28; also, that the Southland County Councilhe communicated with and respectfully asked to grant a small sum for the completion of the road referred to over that portion of it passing through tho Southland eoiiutv. That the engineer be authorised to prepare plans and specifications of work required to open up now road leading from the Main South road down the Kaihiku stream to Mr Telford's property, and call for tenders tor next meeting. That tlie uncollected rates for 1883 to 1884 and separate rate for South Molyneux m same year be written off. With reference to a request made by Mr Veitch.of Warepa, for the council to closearoad running through his property but which had not been laid down in his Crown grant.the Chaibman explained that he had examined into the matter and found that tho Clutha Road Board had paid Mr Veitch £20 for the road referred to 10 years ceo —No action to be taken in the matter This concluded the business, and the council adjourned.
