HIGHLAND SOCIETIES. TO THE EDITOR.
Sin, —Some 10 or 12 years ago a socloty was ' CTtiihlishe.il with n great flourish of trumpets at lluni-ilin, in which the nativea of ihe. Highland counties were invited to join. Well, Sir, two or three, meetings were held at Murray's Privatu Hotel, ;tt which our Gaelio friends wero well represented, and afterwards a very satisfactory " gathering of Uu. clans "was held in tho Temperance [lull. Tint secretary, so fur as I recollect, wns Mr J. Ij. Gillies; but, strange to «iy, Sir, after we hud paid our joining fee and for our tickets at tlie reunion this society seems to have fallen into abeyance. Why this is so I fail to see, but I would suggest that Mr Gillies, tho secretary, and the other officers of the soeioty should call a meeting nml render an account of their stewardship. The funds, if properly placed, must have increased to some extent during this period of years, and as this society never meets it seems to mo only proper that these funds should be distributed pro rata amongst the members and tho association dissolved. New Zealand, Sir, should be New Zealand, and we neither want Moray, Nairn, nor Inverness-shire to be here represented; we want it unanimous whole.—l am, kc,
MacTavish.
Port Chalmers, August 23.
[Wo havo mado inquiries anil find Mr Gillies was neither secretary nor treasurer. He was president in tlie last year of tho society's existence, and wo learn from him that he and other officers had to assist to prevent its having " n pauper's burial." If " M'Tavish " will call on Mr Cullies, wo understand a copy of the bank account could be procured, which would give all the information desired.—Ed. O. D. T. j
