The barque Rebecca, which lias arrived at Auckland from Tonga, flying theTongan flag, is a German built vessel, having been put together at Appiexrade in 1871. She is of 113 tons register, and in her build evideiitlygreat care lias been taken, the predominating timber used in her construction being the good old oak. The cause that led to the barque's coming to Auckland occurred during her passage from Port Augusta, Australia, to Tonga. When she was about 400 mile 3 off her destination she was caught in a fierce storm, which drove the vessel on to her beam ends, and there, despite the efforts of her crew, she remained for 3d hours. The time proved a trying one for the officers and crew, and it had sucli a depressing effect upon her master. Captain I. C.'Boysen, that he was driven to insanity, and. although carefully watche.i, he one day jumped overboard, but was immediately rascued. Eventually the barque reached TongitaMi, and there the master died and was buried. At the representations of the crew.a survey was held of the vessel, with the result that at the inst uctions of tho German Consul the Rebecca was put up for auction, and was bought by Mr William Gray, the custom house officer at Tongatabu, for a sum of about £1000. Mr Gray having had another survey held, he decided, from the encouraging reports given to him by the su; veyors, to have the vessel put into a state of thorough repair, and to accomplish this he brought the barque to Auckland for repairs that may be found required. The Rebecca is chiefly manned by Tongan and other island natives, with Captain Klein in command.—Auckland Hera.d.
