SHIPPING SUMMARY.

Our summary of shipping events this mouth includes occurrences from April 20fch to May 19th, both dates inclusive.

STATISTICAL, FOREIGN ETC. Notwithstanding the season being one in which shipping matters are usually slack, we have very little reason to complain this month of the business transacted, the total number of arrivals being 70 vessels representing 43,335 tons register, aud the departures 56 vessels, representing 49,396 tons register, as against 65 vessels which arrived last mouth with a total of 48,826 tons register and 62 vessels which sailed whose total tonnage came up to 49,538 tons register.

The vessels from oversea ports which have reached us this month have been five, with a total of 8266 tons register, and the departures five_ vessels representing 9351 tons register, against eight vessels which arrived last month representing 12,621 tons, and six vessels which sailed representing 12,705 tons. The first vessel from aii oversea port which arrived was the R.M.S. Ruapehu, of 4163 tons, Captain Greenstreet, from Plymouth, via Madeira and the Cape of Good Hope, after a very excellent passage of 40d 5k 40m. She brought 127 passengers, 265 bags mails, ami 2500 tons of cargo for New Zealand. The Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's ship Lyttelton, of 1111 tons, Captain Borman, from London, arrived at Port Chalmers on May 2, after a very fair passage, and bringing 1800 tons of cargo. She was towed up to Dunedin drawing some 18 feet 5 inches, a fact which fully proves the success of the Victoria Channel. She was followed on May 13 by the same Company's barque Hertfordshire, of 855 tons, Captain Le Couteur, from Glasgow, with 21 passengers and 1100 tons of cargo. This vessel also proceeded to Dunedin, while the same day brought the barque True Blue, of 447 tons, Captain Davison, with a cargo of sugar from the Mauritius, and the American barque Charles G. Rice, of 686 tons, Captain Bailey, from New York, with a full cargo of Yankee notions for this port and Lytteltou. The first vessel to leave the port for oversea was the ship Kilbrannan of 1572 tons, Captain M'Callum. She left on April 27th, in ballast, for Calcutta, and was followed later on the same day by the berque Shakespeare, of 776 tons, Captain Luen, also in ballast, for Portland, Oregon. The Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's ship Lady Jocelyn, of 2138 tons, Captain Watt, left Port Chalmers on May 4th for London, taking 2196 bales of wool, 50 do rabbit skins, 23 do sheepskins, 15 casks of tallow 22 do oil, 6 do pelts, 10,799 carcasses frozen mutton 340 legs of mutton, and 8 quarter-casks brandy The R.M.S. Ruapehu, of 4163 tons, captain Greenstreefc, left Port Chalmers on May 16th for London via Lyttelton. Amongst her cargo from this port was over 13500 carcasses muttonwhile the barque Vallejo, of 602 tons, Captain Harding, sailed in ballast ou May 17th for Portland, Oregon. INTEKCOLONIAL. Our intercolonial, trade this month has been very fair and well represented by the splendid steamers of the U.S.S. Company's line, together with a few sailing vessels. The total number of arrivals have been 12 vessels, representing 17,611 tons register; while the departures for the same period have amounted to nine vessels representing 17,360 tons register. Last mouth the arrivals were nine vessels with a total of 14,599 tons register, and the departures seven vessels of 12,818 tons register. COASTAL. Our coastal trade this month has been a fairly good one and represented by the arrival of 53 vessels of 27,458 tons register, the departures being 49 vessels of 22,643 tons register. While last month the arrivals were 48 vessels whose total tonnage was 21,606, and the departures 49 vessels registering a total of 24 015 tons. DOCK SLIPS, ETC.
