DOWLING STREET WORKS.

TO THE EDITOR.

m §}?~ Seeing that your journal states that U llham Barnes resumed work yesterday morning m startmg the men in Dowling street, I wish to give it an emphatic denial The facts are these:—When tbe jury had examined the blast, the workmen enquired whether they could start again next morning. 1 asked the Coroner if he would give permission, and he answered Yes, if I would be responsible that nothing would be touched about the blast until further inquiry had been made I then ordered the men to come to work the following morning. I started the men myself, superintended tham all day, and also this morning.

I took it upon myself on the night of the accident to suspend the works until further inquiries.

William Barnes has had nothing at all to do with the works since the accident.—l am, &c, John Barnes, Mayor.

Duuedin, May 20.
