OPENING- OF THE NORTH HEADS SCHOOL.
In connection with the opening of the North Heads School, with Miss Maxwell as teacher, a most enjoyable evening was spent on Friday last, when an excellent concert programme was carried through with spirit. Mr D. G. Stephens, chairman of the School Committee, presided, and introduced Miss Maxwell to the parents of the children in the district. Miss Power opened the concert programme by playing a selection on the organ, and MiLindsay gave an address on " Education: Past and Present." The other items on the programme?, which were done full justice to and were heartily received, were: "The Auld Hoose," Miss Paton; reading, " Lochiel's Warning," Mr G. H. Stone; " Daddy," Miss Fanny Palmer; "Afton Water," Miss Bell; recitation, Mr Bdgeworth; " Silver Rhine," Miss Elder; " Auld Granny," Mr D. G. Stephens; reading, "Every man to his trade," Mr Lindsay; "Jessie's Dream," Miss Bell; "Tit for Tat," Miss Power; "Moses and his Mates," Mr Lindsay; "Home they brought her warrior dead," Miss Palmer; " The Bashful Man," Mr Stone; comic recitation, Mr Lindsay ; duet, " Friendship," Misses Bell and Palmer; the programme concluding with a song each from Bliss Paton and Mr D. G. Stephens Votes of thanks having been tendered to the perrormers, the room was cleared for dancing, which was kept up with vigour until the small hours. A plentiful supply of temperance refreshment was served to the dancers. On Saturday the children met at the school at 11 o'clock; and atter being regaled with sandwiches, cake, tea, and other good things, they, together with then- parents, betook themselves to the beach, where sports were indulged in to the enjoyment and satisfaction of old and young. Prizes in the shape of toys and other novelties having been distributed to each of the children, a most enjoyable evening was brought to a close
