CITY COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the City Council, held last evening, was attended by his Worship the Mayor (J. Barnes, Esq.), Crs Pagan, Cairns, Gourley, Murray, Barren, Dawson, Cramond, Mathews, Robin, Esther, and Carroll. COMVESPONDENCE.

A petition was read from a number of citizens occupying premises in Manse street complainin" ot the nuisance and loss caused to them through the cab-stand in that street.—On the motion of Or -BAKfION, the letter was referred to the Tramways Committee with the view of remedying' the evil... .. Members of the United Football Club wrote regarding a dispute with the Richmond Club as '•" which should have the use of the Asylum ground for playing matches.—The matter was referred to the Reserves Committee to act. Bishop Morau wrote regarding the erection of a lamp near the Smith street entrance to the cathedral.—R e f errea to the Works Committee with power to act

Joseph Brown wrote soliciting the patronage ot the city councillors at Mr George Darrell's benefit. He stated that Mr Darrell had commenced his professional career in Dunedin, and that during the past 10 years he had worthily represented the Australian stage in the Colonies, America, and England, and had successfully produced over a dozen original plays from his own pen.—The request was granted. ,M essrs Haggitt Bros, and Brent wrote stating that Mrs Garner was willing to accept £50 without prejudice for injuries received by her on the 22nd March in consequence of her falling over a heap of stones left by the Corporation oh the side of Hanover street. The injuries sustained comprised, among others, the breaking of her left arm and the loss of some of her front teeth.—Referred to the Works Committee to settle. ■

This Committee recommended, with reference to the North Dunedin Drillshed site on the ■rown Belt, that the Council grant a lease for a term of 21 years at a nominal rental of Is per annum to the Drillshecl-trustees, provided the proceeds of letting the hall for any concert or public entertainment be devoted to Volunteer or charitable purposes. In consequence of Constable Parker having withdrawn his resignation as ranger of the Town Belt, they recommended tnat ne be allowed to continnein office. They also recommended that the upset annual rentals of the unleasedallotments 56,55, 59,60, and 61, subdivisions of sections 1 and 2, block IV, Upper Kaikorai district, be reduced from £3 to £'2 10s each. It had been arranged to lay off additional ground from first and second-class allotments in the Southern Cemetery. With reference to the Caversham Council's application to have the footpaths leading from Tay and Vernal streets, Kensington, to the Oval asphalted, the Committee had resolved to offer no objection to the ■Caversham Council doing the work at their own expense.—The report was adopted.

GAS COMJtITTEB. The Gas Committee reported that they had instructed the engineer to have an extra coat of ■ paint put on some of the plates of the large gasholder, which are much corroded, lie motion as to the present condition of the Gasworks and proposed alterations referred back to the Committee, the printed report had been circulated among councillors. With regard to Mr Appleby's tender for purchase and daily removal of ashes and clinker from the Gasworks, the Committee had decided to offer the refuse to the Municipal Department at the rate of £27 3s per annum, and, failing acceptance, Mr Appleby's tender to be accepted.—Adopted.

n WATER COMMITTEE. ihe Water Supply Committee reported having instructed the surveyor to shut off the supply from Ross' Creek reservoir when practicable, in order to collect sufficient water to.supply the city, South Dunediu, and Caversham during the temporary stoppage of the supply from the Southern reservoir while the self-actinr valve is being fixed into the Silverstream mam at the south end of the Caversham railway .tunnel, and.on the completion of that work to take steps to clean out the Ross' Creekreservoir.—Adopted. ;

WORKS COMMITTEK The Works Committee reported having instructed the surveyor to reform and gravel the footpath on Bell Tower Hill; to attend to the disagreeable stench in Princes street; to select^ site in the neighbourhood to which the lure Brigade branch station in Arthur street may be removed in order to abate a nuisance; to asphalt the footpaths on both sides of Dundas street from George street to Leith street; to asphalt footpaths in George sureet from Knox Church to Duke street—Report adopted.

- _ THE UNEJIPLOYED. The Council went into committee to consider matters in connection with the unemployed After a good deal of discussion, it was unanimously agreed that the charge of the unemployed_ should remain with the Mayor and the Committee appointed some time ago. It was also agreed that the Mayor should to-day interview the mayors of the suburban boroughs on the l<lat with the view of gettinc them to urge the widening of the road leading from the kerosene bond to Hayts' comer from half a chain to one chain wide. His Worship has been trying to get this work done, but so far has not succeeded. If the co-operation of the other mayors is obtained, it is thought the work will be undertaken.
