Auckland, April 17,

The Ruruhia Cheese Factory, between Hamilton and Oliaupo, was destroyed by fire at 1 o'clock this morning. The manager's house and contents were destroyed. There was 12 tons of cheese in the factory at the time. The building, machinery, and cottage were insured in the National for £900. It is not known whether the cheese (valued at £600) was insured.

At a meeting of the Operative Bootmakers' Union to consider the question of appointing a committee to meet a similar committee of the employers; after an animated discussion, in which the men appeared as firm as ever in sticking out for their demands, a resolution was passed agreeing to send a committee to discuss the matter and report. Resolutions of sympathy and promise of relief were reported to have been received from various other unions. A circular is to be sent out by the Trades and Labour Congress to all unions in the Colony, asking for help to maintain the strike.

The premises of George Milsorn, Nelson street; used as a dressmaker's establishment by Bliss Tyler, have been partly burned and the stock destroyed. The building was insured for £200 in the South British, and the stock for £180 in the Colonial. The damage is estimated at £250.

Robert Fitzroy Bolton, a well-known commission agent, appeared at the Police Court on a charge of inducing Hudson Williamson, Crown prosecutor, to endorse a promissory noto for £200, with intent to defraud. He was remanded, and bail was accepted iv £500.

William Robert Doyle was poisoned through taking carbolic acid as a sleeping draught. He had been drinking. Robert Featherstone, gumdigger, has boon committed ou a charge of incendiarism at Tokatoka.

A child named Edgar Charles Trevitick was drowned in the Hutt River last eveuiug. He fell in while playing.

A. Mitchell, whose carpet factory was burned ou April 3, was arrested to-day, charged with arson. Ho was brought up at the Court and remanded. The Mayor has received a telegram from Sir J. Vogel advising him to wait till the West Coast railway contract- is signed before holding a demonstration. The hands at Suckling Brothers' boot factory have struck because tho firm refused to veinstate a benehman whom they dismissed, the men suppose, on account of his bemg a prominent member of the Operatives' Society.
