BONDED WAREHOUSE WARRANTS.

At a meeting of the Committee of the Chamber of Commerce on Thursday afternoon, * the following resolution was adopted in regard to bond warrants :—

That the attention of the Hon. the Commissioner of Customs be called to the. fact of certain goods having been cleared at the Customs and removed from a bonded warehouse in Dunedin whilst the warrants representing such goods remained in circulation, the result tieinK that the thorough confidence in bond warrants that formerly prevailed Ims been destroyed, thus hampering commercial transactions and seriously inconveniencing the mercantile community; and that the Hon. the Commissioner be respectfully requested to devise means for restoring public confidence in the value of certificates issued for goods stored in bonded warehouses. The Committee suggest the following simple means for achieving the object indicated—viz.: (1) That the bond warrants be examined and compared with the warehouse books kept at the Customhouse. (2) That there be printed on the face of the warrants a certificate to the effect that they have been exajnined and compared with the warehouse boohs at the Customhouse and are in accordance with the entries therein relating to the goods mentioned in th<i warrant, such ceriitieate to be signed by the landing surveyor or impressed with tho stamp of 11..M. Customs. (3) That the warrants be attached to the entries when the goods are being cleared, and retained and cancelled by the Customs authorities.
