D'UNJSDIN v. INVJSRUAKGILL. The annual four-oared boat-race between tho Dunedin and Invorcargill Clubs took place (says the News) in the estuary at 10 o'clook on "Friday morning, in the presence of a large numbor of spectators. Tha eky was oloudy, the atmosphere chilly, and a drizzling rain was experienced during tho race—not tho ideal of a day for boating. The water, however, could not have been much more suitable, there being little more than a mere ripple on the surface The course was from a white boacon below the jotty up to the Club's BUed, a dietance of two miles. The tide was at about three-quarter flood, and as the course-' was up tho river with the tide, the muscular exponse involved in propelling the heavy boats used was not so exhausting as it might have been. Tho crews were as follow:—Dunedin: Dick, Clayton, Park, and Trythall, Invercargill: G-reig, Clare, Cox, and Walker. When stripped it was plainly to be seen that the Dunedin men were in far better rowing condition than the local representatives, although tho latter had the advantage of physique. With commendable punctuality the race was started. For the first mile the boats pulled stem and stem, bnt on reaching the wharf the Dunedin men, by a spurt, forged ahead—a position they maintained until tho finish, not. withstanding tho efforts of the Invercargill crew, who, although at times oapable of reducing the lead, were not able to pass them. Tho vi3itora proved the victors by a little over a length, aftor a hotly and well contested race.
