SPORTING

NOTES BY BEACON.

My review of the Christchurch Autumn meeting is held over until next week, owing to want of space. In the meantime, full reports of that gathering and of the Auckland Autumn meeting will be found in this issue.

In the Great Autumn Handicap, run on the firist day, the reporter for tho Press Association wrongly gave July, Trenton, and Taiaroa amongst the lint of starters. These horses were scratched, Tha report altogether wbb a very slipshod one, weights of horses and names of jockeys, &o. being in many cases omitted.

The jockey Brown was fined for disobedience at tho starting-post prior to the Selling Race being run, and on tha stewards intimating this to him, he went away, muttering, " That won't burt me !" Upon this he ww called back, fined £5, and suspended from riding for a month. Tbren or four protests were lodged during the gathering, and of the manner in which the stewards deal with such mattera I shall have somnthing to say next week. Mr J. Stephenßon's Everton Lad, the Hon. G. M'Laan's Lady Emma and Lady Gertrude, with Cheap Jack, Garibaldi, Hector, Moody, and other Southern horses left Christchurch on Wednesday by train. I bear that it is unlikely that any of Mr Stephanaon's or Mr .M'Lean's horses will take part in the Timaru meeting. Otago owners were uingularly unfortunate at Chrißtchurch this time, not a solitary race ooming this way—though one should certainly have dono so if everyone had his rights.

Harry Goodman got up a subscription at Ohriatchurch for the jockey J, Mitchell, who has been incapacitated for riding owing to his accident when tiding Spofforth in the District Raca at the Timaru Spring meeting. In the course of an hour or bo Mr Goodman collected £50 or £60, and this will probably be added to.

Nominations for tha Dimsdin May meeting closo to-day as follow;! -.—Provincial flandioap. of 200 »ov« ; May Trotting Handicap, of 75 sovh ; Tradesmen's Handicap, of 100 bovb; Hurdle Handicap, of 80 sovb ; Birthday Handto;»r>, of 160 bovb ; Wintnr Trotting Handicap, nf 75 sovb ; and St. Clair Handicap, of 100 SOVH.

A good deal of ((peculation has been indulged in over the Naw Zealand Cup, July seemg to be moit in demand, and after being backed to win £2000 at 100 to 8, > similar amount was taken about him at 10 to 1 Trenton has been freely supported down to 100 to 8 ; while Vanguard, Oudeis, and Liverpool have plenty of friend* at 100 to 7. A considerable amount has gone on C.iptain Webster at 500 to 20, while 1000 to SO has been written down about Ike, and 1000 to 25 about Rubezahl, Several other horses have been backed at varying quotations. In doubles on the Cup and Derby, prices range from 100 to 1 to 100 to 3, July and Stonyhurst and Trenton and Stonyhurst boiDg backed to win about £1500 at the latter figure. About anything with Manchester for the Derby 100 to 2 can be got.

Bob Ray tells us that be has given the name of Beach to bis colt by Muaket—Wai-iti, in token of his intention to take the Bhine out of Mr Butler's colt Hanlan.-

Mr George Smith, of Dunedin, purchased at Middle Park on Tuesday a youngster by Apremont out of Rupee. It iB pleasant (nays " Sir Liunoelot") to be able to congratulate puch an old Canterbury spnr'pman and prominent member of the C.J.O. an Mr Launcelot Walker on his elevation to the Legislative Council, to which he wbb called a day or two hack. With such " sports" aa tho H'rtia. W. Robinson, W. Reeves, G. M'Laan, and L Walker in the Upper Houpe, mid Colonel Ftaser. Captain Russell, and Mr J. D. L;ncß in the Lower Htmee of our L^gis laturo, one baa strong reason to hope that many of the provisions of that absurd enactment, the Gaming and Lotteries Bill, will be erased from the Statute bunk, though, wbilo the gentlomen Bamed hold eeate in the Legislature, there need bB little fear of tho totalisator being "squelobed."

Tba Hon. G. M'Lcnn itum bought Mr Nos Y/ortby'tt Malice, by 2'raau'oer, for Si suisa&e,
