THIS "SPOT STRONE."

The following description of tha "spot stroko " at billiards made easy iB from a leading London paper:—" For the benefit of those of our readers who have often wandered at the vast difference in the certainty and quality of the play between professionals and amatrars— a difference which occVirs to the same extant in ilo othor art or sport that we know of—:md would aim at greater proficiency in spobstrikiug than the instructions vouchsafed by the professionals will permit of, we will disclose this litfclo secret, and can assure those who will profit by it and practise it assiduously that they will be well repaid for their trouble. In the ordinary way, whoa a ball is to be pocketed, an imaginary line drawn from the pocket through its centre will indicate to the player tbo oxaot spot upon its circumference on which tho striker's ball must hit it in ordpr to effect the hazard. But if, instead of thus striking his own ball in the middle, the player will first aim dead full at tba object-ball (hia cue, ball, and object-ball being in the name straight line), and will then bofora striking change trm direction of his cue so that it points at the spot upon the objeot-ball where the imaginary line intersects its circumfrranca, he will find that the hazard will be rendered so much easier that it will be.almost a oartainly. Moreover, the 'side' thus put upon the ball will cifton be of (.hj greatest aa-siatisnco in rega'ning position. The chief difference in this mode of playing the luz:-rd ließ in the striker ' divid ing ' tha objact bill instead of his own, an arrangement which minimises any discrepancy in tho aim."
