EDUCATIONAL RETURNS,

The attendance returns for the quarter ended 31st March, which have just been compiled by the Otago Education Board, show that there were 169 schools in operation during the quarter, employing 237 male and 222 female teachers, besides 14 teachers of sewing. The number of pupik on the school rolls at the beginning of tho quarter wa3 19,925, and at tho end of the quarter 22,093 —consisting of 11,381 males and 10,712 females. There wero therefore admitted during the quarter over 2000 children.

Tba total average attendance was 9579 boys and 5971 girle—making a total of 18,550, being an increase of C35 on tho previous quarter, and of 7So on tho corresponding quarter of last year. Tho average attendances in the Dunediu and suburbnn schools vrero :—George street, 772; Arthur street, 721; Normal, 714; Albany street, 714 ; Union street, G25; Caversham, CIO; Port Chalmers, 51)3; William shoot, EGG ; Mawudrow road, 624 ; Mornington, 513 ; Kaikorai, 459; Porbury, 434 ; NorthEast Valley, SSG ; and Kensington, 326. In Cimnru the attendances were :—South School, 420; North School, 406; and District High School, 370. During the quarter now schools wore opened at Lupgate, Maerewhenua, and Waitepeka township.

At the date of tho inauguration of the present educational scheme, when tho Ofcago and Southland districts wore combined, tho highest average attendance attained wao 11,749. It i8 ■therefore worthy of note that tho past quarter iu Otago aloua shows an increase of considerably over B0 por cent, on that number.
