DUNEDIN EAST.

The official declaration took place at the Union street Schoolhouse at noon yesterday, in "presence of about 150 people. Mr Stewart (the returning-officer) Baid he had found the numbers unaltered upon revision. The figures were :— Stoub .. .. .. .. 755 Grcoa .. .. .. ..BIS Majority for Stoub .. ..210 There were no informal votes. He had therefore to declare Mr Robert Stout duly elected. Mr Stout said he had to thank the electors for having returned him as thoir representative, and he could assure them that he-would do everything in his power to carry out his eleotion pledges. It was easy for anyone to see from the constitution of the newly-elected House that there would be difficulty in forming a Ministry, as there were so many diverse parties; but he would exercise what influence he had in doing everything possible to bring about an agreement between the different sections of the Opposition.—(Hear, hear.) He had to express his hope that this would be the last time religion would be referred to in an election contest. Many of his warmest slipporters thought differently from himself on religious subjects, and the electors had shown by the result that they disapproved of the introduction of religion into politics.—(Hear, hear.) He was glad to see that at Wanganui the electors had shown 'the same feeling, for Mr Ballance, against whom the same objections had been made as against himself, had beeu returned by a large majority. He was sorry to see a letter, signed " Freethinker" in

that morning's paper. It had evidently been 1 written tq keep alive bad feeling, and he did not believe it had baon written by a Freethinker. He much regretted its appearance. In conclusion, he paid a warm tribute of thanks to hia Committee, to whose exertion 3he owed his success in a great measure. Mr Green was not present, After three cheers had been given for Mr Stout, and that gentleman had proposed a vote of thankß to the returning-officer, those present dispersed.
