WEST HARBOUR BOROUGH COUNCIL.

At the ordinary meeting of the West Harbour Borough Council, held last evening, there were present—The Mayor (in the chair), Crß Young, Jack, Curie, Crickmore, Bolton, and Bain. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. FINANCE. Several accounts were laid before the Council and passed for payment. COBBESPONDENCE. Mr William Barkley wrote stating that a cheque signed by the Mayor, Cr Jack, and the late clerk (Mr Newton), and having the common seal of the Board nifixed thereto, and drawn for the sum of £15, had come into his possession in the drdinary course of business, and that on hia presenting the same at the bank payment had been refused; and he asked the Council to arrange for the honouring of the cheque.—On the motion of Cr Jack, seconded by Cr Cukle, it was decided that the letter be received, and that Mr Bavkley be asked to return the cheque he holds, and that a fresh one be issued to him. BOBOUGH KANGEB. Several applications were read, and referred to the consideration of a committee, to report on the next meeting night of the Council, when the question as to the advisability of combining the office with that of ianger will be concidered. BALANCE-SHEET. The Clerk laid before the Council a copy of the last annual balance-sheet which he had roceived from tho Colonial Treasurer (the original having been burned).—On the motion of O Adams, seconded by Cr Curlb, it was decided to forward a copy thereof to the bank manager. NOTICES 01' MOTION. Cr Jack brought forward a motion, which was seconded by Cr Adams, to the effect that a footpath be formed in Montague street, 4ft wide, 2J chains in length, covered with screenings ; estimated cost, £10. It was, however, subsequently decided on an amendment by Cr Bain, seconded by Cr Cdrle, that the consideration of the matter stand over for three months. THE HATES. On the motion of Cr Adams, the Clerk was instructed to report at each meeting of the Council as to the progress made in reaped; to rates collected. The Clerk read a report, and made some statements relative to his endeavours to obtain information as to arrears of rates due to the borough, stating that he had found much difficulty in meeting with the ratepayers, who were absent at business, and that many refused to show theirreceipts, telling him to sue first, and that then they would show them, and he asked the Council to advise him as to what stringent measures they were prepared to take in the matter. On the motion of Cr Adams, the clerk was instructed to continue bis house-to-house yisit, and when his round was completed to give a list of those refusing to show their receipts. MAUKOATUA ENDOWMENT. The Mavob stated that the leases of the borough endowment had been sold at a rental of Is per acre.
