THE SALVATION ARMY.

TO THE EDITOR.

Sin,—As a lover of justice, I must protest against the wretched bare assertions of Charles Matthews. Your correspondent first brings a charge against Major Barker of using words which I deny emphatically ever were used. Then- your correspondent attacks General Booth for his supposed mismanagement of the Grecian Theatre. Allow me to say, Sir, tho case is not near settled yet, and it is too booh to say that General Ci>oth is to blame. I bolieve the General has acted in a most gentlemanly manner in the matter. Then your cor respondent attacks Major Pollard for asking his audience for money. It is a shame and disgrace for tho Army to take money in these hard.times from the people—so says Charles Matthews. How absurd ! What next ? It is a shamo and disgraco for people to do what they like with their own. It is a shame to give it to anyone but Charles Matthews! Hard times! If your will help to put . a stop to tho sale of drink, we shall soon hoar less about hard times. But "Charles Matthews also makes a wretched statement when ho asks mothers to keep their daughtdrs away from the Army. I dare him to substantiate this statement. It is untrue, and has no foundation. Sir, misrepresentation and falaehoodswill not crush the Army. 1 admire the Army, because persons of all denominations can join it. Thera is a unity and sympathy with each other in the Army which is not to bo found in tho churches, and tho Army takos an out-and-out stand against drink, which has not been done by the churches. The Army demands a full public confession of Christianity from everyono who joins it. For these reasons I defend the Army. All very well to try ancf find fault with tho Army, but what about the good it does ?—I am, &c, A Friend. September 15. '
