THE SALVATION ARMY IN CHRISTCHURCH.

Christohukch, September 15. Major Barker, of the Salvation Army, arrived this afternoon from Timaru. Ho was met at the railway by over 300 soldiers, half of whom wero women and children, with a band. About 2000 persons assembled around the station, tho larrikin element being very strong. A considerable numbtr of polico in uniform and plain clothes wore scattered among the crowd, and tho larrikins, confined themselves to hooting. Major Barker mouuted his " chariot," a four-wheeled cab, and drovo to Sydenham, where a." free and easy " was held. On the way a man named Thomas Patrick, working on a building in Manchester street, throw a packet of stone dust at the band, and was immediately arrested. In tho evening colours were presented to the Sydenham corps. Tho proceedings wero orderly. It is known that the brrikins had planned to rush Barker's carriage at the station, but the number of police present prevented them from doing so.
