The interproviucial football match, Wanganui v.".Nelson, played yesterday,-was most unsatisfactory. Within five minutes"of the commencement, Cookley, of -Wanganui," collared the ball and attempted a run... He was stopped by Malcolm. Both came: heavily to the ground. Cookley sustained a bad fracture of the leg just above the ankle, and had;to ba carried off the field. His brother took his place. Directly afterwards P. G. Smith (captain of the Wanganui team) had a spill, and was stunned, but after a time was able to go on. The first spell of 40 minutes concluded without a score. The teams appeared evenly matched. In the second spell Nelsdh pressed their opponents hard. A Wanganui man got the 'ball and started (to run, but the Nelson umpire shouted M Off-side, and ho one attempted to stop him. .He. carried, tbe ball behind the Nelson goal. A dispute then arose between the umpires. Mr Cross (the i-Wan-ganui umpire) now,denied the man was offside. There, being no referee "appointed, and neither umpire giving in, the Wanganui men walked off the ground, and Mr Uaddeley (tha Nelson captain) claimed the viotory.f.There was a large attendance of the public. -For the firat timo in Nelson shouts of "Sling him down !" frequently resounded. The accident to Cookley was a damper to the game."~;
The football match, Fergusson and Mitchell v. Second Fifteen Pirates, was played'on the Asylum ground on Saturday.and resulted in a victory for. V... and M." by one.try to. .nil. The try was obtained by Thomson. The playing of Thomson, Taylor, Hogg/ Fraser, and M'Farlane, for the victors, was very good. As a forward, Taylor played the best game on the ground. For the vanquished, Jolly, Kennedy (as forwards), and '(as backs) Ivens, Watson, Esquilant, and Burrows were noticeable. .''■■':■••;..-..;.
