MINING.

NOTES FROII LAKE COUNTY. [By Tklkraph.j (FROM OUR OWK CORRESPiIKDMJT.)

ArsoW, September 13. The seventy of tho continued night .frosts has not permitted of any start being mado with either crushing or open-air w..rk. Snow lies to great depthß on tho hi«h peaks and lovcli about Maeotown, making the air cold and chi ly so soon as the sun sink* behind the bills, resulting in very severe frosts towards morning. This Is rathor unseasonable weather at this lime ol year, but U compensated for by tho prospect of i plentiful supply ol rnotivo power now lying latent in masses of well-frozen suow, promising a good water-supply for the whole summer. When the weather permits, the seoton will open with very much the same prospects as did the iatt one There is now considerably upwards of 1000 tons of quartz at glass, which will vary closely opproxlmate 2oz per ton. It bos boon chiefly raised from the Glalmono and Premier claims, the termer of which will be the earliest to mako a stait wi h crushing operation*, although tno Tipperary, which is still the principal cake-producing mine at Macetown, starts the season with an almost empty paddock. The manager has tho mine opened out bo well that ths macmne can be kept going all summer, and it is expected that the yield will exceed that of any former j car. The All Nations Company are getting out some good stone from the Bhoot recently opened out, and will give a: good account ot itself during the next six months. * • " . , ■

Tho Homeward-Bound are get'iog out stone which shows Uir gold, and should pay dividends, cumbering the facilities this Company possess in bringing their quartz to the mill. Tho c.aims at Advance Peak alao will very likely materially assist in adding to the number of cakes, and make an oprpcciabie addition to the grand total of gold sent down from Macetown. Several new claims, which after preliminary prospectinu have disclosed payable lodo<, will a!ao bo tahon in hand in a systematic manner Amongst theso the Difunce Company is one of ihe most promising, and tbe shareholders are to be commended for the manner they have stuck to thoir holding; and if the work in the miue U carried on in the s.mo spirit, thcro is little doubt that they will be rewarded toe their enterprise. The Garibaldi Company olbo will enter the list of c ikeproducing claims next season, as stono of a very good quality has been struck, and preparations for getting ie out wholesale wi 1 be nudo as soon aa practicable.

All this points to an active and prosperous season, and thuula the road now in course of construction bo completed in contract time (end of July next), we may expect greatly-increased activity at the Mocotpwn reefs. Mr B. Pritohord, general storekeeper at Arrow, whose branch store and stock at Ma.etowu were totally destroyed by fire about two month's ago, intends to rebuild at once. This looks well for toe place, and shows that the business doing is ot ft healthy character. *

The reefs at Skippers, which are not so much affected by the winter eeason as those at Macetowu, beuause they occur at a low level, are in a heiltby state. Mr Fred. Evans is making good progress witn respect to the Phoraix claim by low levels, and work has continued uninterruptedly all the winter. Tbs Gallant Tlpperary Company have decided to erect crushing machinery, and to open up tho claim in a thorough manner as Eoon as"tho weather will permit. Good news continues to come from the Invincible Company, at the Rees Valley, head of Lake Wakatipu, and parties are directing their attention to this part of the district as a likely field for prosperingfor both alluvial and quartz gold, encouraging quantities of which have been found in the put seaBon. The chief difficulty to contend with is that of obtaining supplies of provisions and material, as the country is very rough. No real woik has as yet been done in the newly token-up quartz claims in the immediate neighbourhood of Arrowtown. -

NOTES FROM REEFTON.

[By Teleorapu.] (from ode own correspondent.)

Reeftos, September 13. A small diversion in thofe dull times is being made today. It has always been considered that the river and banks ot the inaugahuo weie likely to contain some alluvial gold, but while all attention was being paid to quartz mining, this branch baa benn left in abeyance. Within the last day or two Mr H. G. Hankin again mooted the matter, and with the assistance of Mr J. Palmer, who has gained a great deal of experience hi the Otago river workings, has succeeded in forming a Prospecting Association to try the ground. A number ot business people In town have promised support, and the venture will bo started on Monday next. . Mr Travu, a practical cement-miner from ths Blue Spur, and accredited by the Dunedln shareholders in the Lankey Creek Company, arrived in town last night. Mr D. P. Anderson, one of the directors cf the Company, went up with him this morning to the claim, and pointed out the workings. Tno late manager of the Company (Mr"\V. Cummins) has been instructed to assist Mr Travis in every possible manner to make a : thorough examination of the ground. ' . :
