Sir,—ln your leader of to-day's issue you are good enough to give a qualified prominence to my name in connection with the removal of tho bar at Otago Heads. I neither profess to be a heaven-bom genius, nor do I put forward .my scheme as an engineering experiment. The public works'l have "earned oat In America stand as monuments to my name as a marine engineer, second to none in this Colony at all events. ' ' ' ' , My plans for deepening the entrance to , James' River were accepted against all comers in America, and on completion of the, works the depth of water was increased <from.l2ft'to ■33ft, and so it is to this day.'l ''" .-<> r v. ' I know it is exceedingly difficult fc* an-out-aide peisou to get'a footing in such vested interests as the Otago Harbour Board poMtu.
