ARRIVAL OF SIR JULIUS VOGEL.

Sir Julius and Lady.Vogel arrived in Duni edin by the express train from Invercargill at' 7 o'clock last night, having been passengers by the Rotomahana, which got-into- the Bluff early yesterday morning. Unfortunately, until the publication of our evening contemporary it was not known that Sir Julius was coming on by the train; consequently .what arrangements were made to give him a.welcome were vory hurriedly made, and nothing like a formal demonstration could bo attempted. ~ The Mayor (Mr James Gore), Mr T. Bracken,'M.H.R., and two or three Other citizens awaited Sir Julius' arrival on the railway-platform, and on his leaving the train his Worship the Mayor addressed to him a few words of cordial welcome to Dunedin, a city in which for many years he had his home, and in which he has many acquaintances friends. Mr Bracken also welcomed Sir Julius, and explained that had the fact of his expected arrival been known, doubtless the two other Dunedin M.H.R.'s -Messrs Fish and Greenwould have been present. • _ Sir Julius gave a suitable reply, expressing his pleasure at once again visiting Dunedin, and at knowing that he was still kindly remembered by its citizens. As Sir Julius and Lady Vogel drove away from the station, a cheer was given by those assembled. - ■ ■■ .

Sir Julius and' Lady Vogel were passengers by the Rotomahana. -The Mayor and Corporation of Carapbelltown, accompanied by several leading • townspeople, went on board, and presented Sir Julius with an address of welcome. The address referred fb Sir Julius' eminent services previous to leaving New Zealand, and as Agent-general. Sir Julius expressed the great gratification that; had been given him by such an expression of good feeling, coming, as it did, unexpectedly, and beforo landing in New Zealand. He assured them that, whether present or absent, he always had the good of New Zealand at heart. V ■ Invercargill, December 13fch; On arrival's* Invercargill Sir Julius Vogel remained for some time at the station, and was afterwards met by the Mayor, but there was no attempt at an organised reception.
