Auckland, October 10th. Guscott, the well-known herbalißt, died yesterday. Mr Peacock addressed the electors of City North yesterday, and received a Vote of thanks.

The fortieth anniversary of the arrival of the ships Duchess of Argylo and Jane Gilford with Scotch immigrants in Auckland was celebrated yesterday by a reunion of survivors and their descendants. About 500 arrived in the two ships, of whom 50 were present last night. Twenty of the survivors have 662 descendants.

The Zealandia had for San Francisco 14 boxes of gold, shipped by the Bank of New Zealand, valued at £50,559; two boxes gold coin, shipped by the National Bank, valued at £15,000. Tawhiao has returned to Whatiwhatihoe from Kawhia. The Natives'are now anxious to know when Mr Bryce will meet them. The Opera-house was tested as to the time in which it could be emptied ordinarily by the immense crowd at the Rev. Mr Cook's lecture to-day. The.house was packed to excess, and nearly ail the local clergy wero on the platform.

Masterton, October 10th. The Mastorton Town Hall was destroyed by fire between 1 and 2 o'clock this morning. Tho hall was occupied with a Maori danco till about a-quartor of an hour bofore the flames were discovered. It is believed that tho lire originated in a room in front of the building, where kerosene was stored. James Brown (tho lessee) and his wifo and family, who livo at the back, barely escaped with their ljves, the family escaping in their night-dresses. The hall was a wretched specimen of the architecture of a byogone ago, and general satisfactioil is expressed at its summary romoval. Tlio Courthpuse and County and Highway Board otlicos (adjoining) wore , blistored, and narrowly escaped, but tho efforts of thfiremen with their two onginos saved them. Tho broach-of-proniise case Swconoy v. Leybouniß was concluded at 5.80 this evening, the jury finding for the plaintiff, and awarding £25 damages. The iimnuul claimed was £200.

Tho wife of the notorious Michael Murphy, money-lender, oned her husband for mainte-

naHce to-day. stating that she was starving. Murphy, however, is in gaol for debt, and the Magistrate adjourned the case till Monday, advising Mrs Murphy to visit the relief-officer lithe meantime. About a quarter past 2 p.m. to-day the body of a man was found in * yard next to the White Hart Hotel, being first seen by a boy employed at the hotel. A constable proceeded to the spot, and found the corpse lying on its back in the corner of the yard. There were no marks of violence about the body, which was not stiff. Dr Hunt was fetched, and expressed the opinion that the man had not been long dead. He was dressed in a brown twoed suit, with hat to match; a number of papers, and 18s in silver, were found on him. He was apparently about 26 years of age, and had dark brown hair and moustache. The appearance of his face seemed to indicate that death had resulted from apoplexy. He was stopping at Klingenstein's Hotel, where he called this morning apparently in his usual health. His name is believed to be Bradburn, and he is said to be well connected, but of intemperate habits. He arrived last night from Timaru. The new coursing-ground is getting along; 77 acres have been levelled and sown m grass, a belt of trees, with plenty of wattles among them, and a lot of parsley and other herbs attractive to hares, planted round the enclosure, and a large order sent Home for wire netting. The ground is expected to be ready next season. A grand stand, kennels, stables, caretakers' cottages, &c. will also be erected in due time. _

At the Resident Magistrate's Court Messrs Joubert 'and Twopeny sued a man named Parker for the unlawful removal of a founda-tion-stone from the Exhibition ground, and obtained a verdict for £12.

Upwards of 130 teachers attended the Saturday morning drawing-classes at the School of Arts.

The building temporarily used as a hotel at Little Akaloa was burnt down last night, together with about £100 worth of stock that was received only last Tuesday. The work is that of an incendiary, as two threatening letters were received by the proprietor, saying the place would be destroyed if rebuilt. The original hotel was burnt Sdown just bofore the Akaroa fires, and at the time the cattso was supposed to be a defective chimney. A little girl named Cicely Mullins, 18 months old, fell into a well at Addington this afternoon and was drowned.

Invercargill, October 10th. A house belonging to K. Smith was burnt down at Waikiwi last night. It was insured for £100 in the Norwich Union Office.
