Saturday, 29th July. (Before Messrs J. Hazlett and R. Chisholm, J.P.'s.) RobbinG A Till.—Neil Benom was charged with stealing from a till in the bar of the Queen* Hotel, Albany street, the sum of Bs.— He was sentenced to a fortnight's imprisonment, and as he had lla in his possession when arrested, the sum stolen was refunded to the hotelkeeper, Mr Norris. Burglary.—William Jones was charged with breaking into the office of the Otago Daily Times and Witness Newspapers Company on or about the 2nd inst., and with stealing therefrom tho sum of £4 8s 9d, the property of George Capstick; and also the sum of 6s, belonging to the Company.—George Fenwick, managing director of the Otago Daily Times gnd Witness Newspapers Company (Limited), deposed that on Saturday, the Ist inst., he visited the office about 8 p.m., and that on leaving everything was safe and in good order. Next day he was informed of the burglary, and on going to the office at 2 o'clock n tne afternoon he found that an entrance had been effected info the premises by someone through a window leadini? to the engine-room. He also discovered that the desks in the ad-vertising-office had been broken open.—Henry Miers, advertising clerk, gave evidence as to leaving jri hjs till os lid on Saturday afternoon, and missing the sum afterward?.—Gaorge Capstick, bookkeeper, said that when he left the office on Saturday therg y/as SA Bs'lod in his drawer. He afterwards found that }t had been taken. —David Little, machinist, testified as to the office being properly secured when he left about 1 p.m. on Saturday.—Detective Walker, who had arrested the prisoner on the 21st inst. at; Waimate, deposed that when the charge was rejpted to him the latter said : " I will tell you all the truth about it. Williamson and Ahem were staying in a houso with me at St. Kilda, and they took me to the Daily Times office about 6 o'clock on the Sunday morning. Ahem broke the window open with a chisel, and he and I went inside. Williamson stopped outside to watch. Ahem knew the run of the place, and took me upstairs. He broke open a lot of the drawers in a room upstairs and got the money. He tp)4 me that he got £2 15s. He divided it afterwards and gave me 2os, saying he had 2fls for himself, and that he would only give Williamson 5s because he ran away and we might have been caught."—Prisoner was committed for trial.—Prisoner was aftewards charged with breaking into the Pelichet Bay railway-station on or about the 25th of June, and soling therefrom 13s and also with burglariously entering the office of Mr Keith Rarasav, shipping jfgent, in Vogel street, on or about the 2nd inst.—The prfspner had admitted his guilt, and was committed for tvuu m these cases also.
