HEAVY RAINS IN THE NORTH.

(Per United Press Association.;

Wellington, July 28th. A heavy downpour of rain commenced yesterday afternoon, and continued without diminish ing throughout the night. The low-lying por tions of the city were flooded by the terrific rush of water. The Te Aro end of the city suffered most, and in several places the streets were torn up through the bursting of culverts. Kilbirnie and Newtown suffered. In some instances houses were flooded to a depth of three feet. The approach on the Welhngton side of Ngahauranga bridge was carried away, and traffic was interrupted for the greater part of the day. A heavy landslip has taken place on the railway, about four miles beyond Kaitoke, completely blocking the line. The Wairarapa trains this morning were unable to get through, but had to tranship their passengers, mails, &c. After this exchange had been effected, the trains reversed their respective courses, the inward train returning to Wairarapa, and tho outward train coming baclt to town, where it arrived about three-quarters of an hour late. A strong force of men is at work clearing away the fallen earth and rocks, and it is expected that the lino will be got clear tonight. The volume of water which poured down Karon Gully soon filled the main reservoir, and this morning it overflowed its embankment. Serious consequences were anticipated, but during the day the flow subsided, and an examination showed the reservoir had sustained but little damage. The whole water of the harbour is a bright yellow colour, owing to the tremendous fall between 5 last evening and 9.30 this morning (nearly three inches). This is the heavest fall recorded in the same numbsr of hours since 18G4, with one exception—viz., during the night of the sth March, 1871, when 3'C5 inches fell, and caused heavy floods. The weather is still very boisterous.
