SOUTH CANTERBURY J.C. MEETING,

(Pkr United. Press Association.) Timaru, April 26tk. Tho races to-day were better attended, and more interest generally was taken in them. The weather was again very fine. The following are the particulars of the various events :—

S.C.J.C. HANDICAP, 0/160 soys., with a sweepstake of 5 sovb, to go to tho second horse. Distauee, 1J mile. The winnor of the Timaru Cup to carry 71b penalty. Mr W. Walters' Libeller, 5 yrs, 7st 101b (Ivimy) 1 Mr D. O'Brian's Tasman, 3 yrs, G)fc 131b (\V. Butler) 2 Mr H. Goodman's Sir JloJrod, 3 yrs, 9it (C. Kudings) 3 Sir H. Robinson's Lady Emma, Mr P. Butler's Luna, Mr E. Cutts' Chancellor, Mr G. W. H. Lee's Emir Bey, Mr G. Bate's The Poet, Mr H. P. Lance's Envy filly, and Mr G. Frascr's Hinemoa also started.

Betting: 2to 1 agst Luna and Envy filly, 3 to 1 agst Sir Modred and Libeller, 5 to 1 agst Tasman, 6 to 1 and upwards the rest. This, the first and most important race of the day, was a splendid one, a field of 10 turning out for it, and, with one exception, all going together in very close order the' whole way, and at a good pace. On entering the straight, the race lay between the Envy filly, Tasinan, Libeller, and Sir Modred, and as all four seemed in it, there was a good deal of excitement manifested. Libeller had a slight advantage at the rails, and kept it to the finish. The filly fell back at that point, and Tasman and Sir Modrod came in almost neck and neck, only half a length behind the winner. The rest were very close up, except Hiuemoa, who had dropped back from the top of tho course, and Emir Bey had made up a lot of ground. Time. 2 mm. 42J sec. Of 155 investors at £2 in tho totalisator, five only were on the winner, and of 257 in the one outside at £1, only 11 were on the winner.

HANDICAP HURDLE lUCE, Of SO soys; second horse to receive £10 out of the stakes. Distance, about two and a-half miles; over eight flights of hurdles. Mr Shorwin's Mokaralcara, lOst 21b .. O'Brien's Trovatore also started. The betting was 2 to 1 agst Clarence, and 3 to 1 the others. Trovatoro came down, and'got away from her rider. Mokaralcara passed the post a couple of lengths ahead, with Clarence Milo, and Qnamby close together. ' ! Shenviu'o Colilstream, 6st 71b (Chapman) 0 Nautilus and SirModred were scratched. The betting was even and 3 to 2 on Luna. The mare was landed a winner by a couple of lengths, the second and third almost side by side, and Coldstream a length behind them. This race brought the meeting to a close.
