Application had also been made to the Otago University Board for permission to resume quarrying stone on the b niversity reserve south of Union street Paysheets and accounts had been passed amounting to £739 6s 3d.—The report was adopted.

. FINANCE COMMITTEE. This .Committee reported that accounts had been passed for -payment amounting to £2694 10s 10d, made up as follows :-Municipal account, £1622 7s Id ; water account, £309 3s 5d ; gas account, £763 0s 5d.-Tho report was adopted.

GAS COMMITTEE. Hie Oras Committee in their report recommended that 15,000 Stourbridge firebricks-bo purchased from Messrs Turnbu.ll and Co., at f lO Per 1000, tho present supply being low ; that lhomas Pinch, formerly in charge of tho meter and purifying-houses at the gasworks, be paid full wages for two months from ICth IN ovember last, at which time he had the misfortune to break his leg whilst attending to the purifiers. Pay-sheets and accounts had been possed amounting to £1556 Is 3d.—The report was adopted. _ BATHS AND SANITARY COMIHTTEE. This Committee reported, in reference to the communication of Dr Maunsell (medical officer), that the store in Princes street south alluded to was used for storing bonedust only, the smell from which was only offensive during the time of removal. The guano store also referred to was now empty ; and with respect to Smith street, the property-owners were forming a drain to remedy the nuisance complained of.—The report was adopted. WATER SUPPLY COMMITTEE. _This Committee recommended that Mr Donald Reid, of Dunedin, be appointed to act as valuator in the Silverstream compensation case, Eossbotham v.. City Corporation, to value the land taken and form an estimate of the damage done by severance. The city surveyor had been instructed to line with concrete the side of Silverstream race adjacent to the sieves at the reservoir, and to construct an sriVr-?, nal • crossing over the race on Mr M Millan's land as agreed to at the time of settlement with him. Arrangements had been completed for immediately commencing' the survey of a race from Silverstream "race to Powder Creek. Accounts had been passed amounting, to £4C 18s Sd.—The report was adopted. RESERVES COMMITTEE. This Committee recommended that the f suburban municipalities be urged to take early steps to provide cemetery accommodation fisr their respective districts, the two city cemeteries having become quite inadequate to the requirements of the city and suburbs. That fche allotment numbered 100, of the subdivision of section 6, block VII, Town district, be transferred to the Government for the purpose of being included in the Anderson's Bay road. The chief surveyor had reported that an agreement was concluded many years ago providing that all the ground on the east side of the Anderson's Bay road should be given to the Government for the widening of the said road, various complaints having been made of the desecration of graves, &c. in the city cemeteries, the Committee had drawn up" regulations to be observed by the sextons, with strict injunctions to prosecute any person ihfriu°-ino-ihe rules.—The report was adopted. CLOSING OF JETTT STREET. The .Sub-committee appointed re Jetty street reported .having conferred with the M.H.R.'s for the GHj;, and the Harbour Board, on the 27th ult., with the result that a resolution was passed favourable to the opening of Jetty street to the steamers' basin on the level or by means of a bridge. Pursuant to another resolution, the Committee had also conversed upon the subject with the Hon. R. Oliver, and on the same day interviewed Mr Maxwell, the •general manager of railways, at his request. A short discussion took place on this report, ,t)ie Mayor and several councillors holding that ■.the Corporation had a vested right in the street, and the matter was eventually referred to the legislative Committee for consideration.
