Yesterday's meeting of this Council was attended by the Chairman (Mr H. Clark), and Councillors Duff, Rutherford, Smith, Murray, Calder, Robertson, Wilson, and Petrie

CORRESPONDENCE. Mr H S. Reunert, Clntha County clerk wrote stating that tenders for the planking of the southern approach of the Clutha bridge had.been opened, with the reault that D. M'Farlane's tender of £41 13s Sd had been accepted, subject to the Bruce Council and Clutha Borough Council's approval. It had been resolved that the planking of the northern approach bo done by day labour, tho timber to be taken out of the piles of the old bridge. It had also been decided not to proceed with the painting of the bridge till next spring.—On the motion of Mr '-RuTHEitFORD, it was resolved not to renpond to the application of the Clutha County Council till such time as the Balclutha Borough Council sent in their written decision -with reference to their former resolution as to the maintenance of the bridge from the time it was opened. On this being agreed to by tho Borough Council the Bruce Council would at once asseut to the one-third payment requested.

UEPORT. The Inspector reported that the countyroads were in a good state of repair, and the surfacemen were doing their work in a satisfactory manner. The defective planks in the Stony Creek bridge had been taken out and replaced by new ones. The contractor for the new bridge at Kaitangata had made but little progress with his work.—Adopted. HOSPITAL FUND. The Chairman intimated that the county subsidy from tho Government of 10s in the pound, amounting to £1112 9s 9d, had been received from Wellington. He wished to bring under the notice of councillors the fact that the amount deducted annually from this fund for the maintenance of tho Dunedin Hospital was £302. This only left them a balance of some £800 odd, and considering that they had to subsidise the Tuapeka Hospital to the extent

of £160 he thought it was very unfair/more especially as the majority of Milton patients were sent to the Tuapeka institution. He thought.they should remonstrate with the Government about it.—lt was decided that a aeputation consisting of the Chairman and Messrs Smith and Rutherford wait on the ilon. .\jr Oliver with the view to ascertain if a different arrangement could not be made.

. DATE OF MEETING. Owing to the small amount of business transacted by the Council it was decided to hold the meetings only every second month.

HAWKERS' LICENSES. The Chairman intimated that some dissatisfaction existed amongst hawkers at the rates charged by the Council for licenses. The Council charged £5 for a license, whereas the fee fixed by the borough councils was only £2. —It was resolved to communicate with the Clutha, Taieri, and Tuapeka County Councils with the view of bringing about joint action in such reduction of the fee as might be deemed necessary.

" LICENSING COMMITTEES. The Chairman intimated that it would be now necessary to take steps-for the election of licensing committees. The Council would be put to a great deal of expense in this matter, and even for districts where no licenses would be granted.—lt was decided to empower the town clerk, acting under Mr Wood, R.M. (Lawrence), to take the necessary steps forthwith.

GENERAL. The Returning-officer reported that an election for a councillor for Waihola riding, in the place of Thomas Hughan (resigned), had resulted in Andrew Robertson being returned by a majority of 14 votes; the numbers polled being—Andrew Robertson, 53; James Milne,
