Thursday, September. 23. Russell—Waitaki arrived G a.m. from Auckland; Bailed 8 p.m. - for Auckland. Auckland—Rotomahana sailed 11.30 a.m. for Gla borne. . Gisborne—Rotoruo, arrived 5 a.m. from Napier; sailed 8 a.m. for Auckland. Wellington—Wanaka sailed 2.50 p.m. for Picton. Lyttelton—Hawea arrived 12.45 p.m. from Wellington ; sailed 4.30 p.m. for Akaroa. Akaroa—Haw ca arrived evening from Lyttelton ; Sailed evening for I'ort Chalmers. Nelson—Taiaroa arrived 9 a.m. from Wellington; ■ailed 11 a.m. for PR-ton. Pictou -Wanaka arrived evening from Wellington ; sailed evening for Nelson. Taiaroa arrived evening from Nelson ; sailed evening for Wellington. Greyniouth—Albion arrived 10 a.m. from Nelson.

The s.s. Beautiful Star, from Oamaru, arrived at Port Chalmers at midnight on Wednesday. The brigantine Defiance, consigned to Mr G. Blyth, arrived oft the Heads yesterday morning, and waa towed up to Dunedin by the p.s. Peninsula. Tlie Defiance left Wangaroa on the 14th instant, and experienced light variable winds to arrival. The s.s. Kingarooma, with the inward Suez mails, passengers ana cargo, from Melbourne, via Hobart Town and the Bluff, arrived at Port Chalmers at 5.20 a.m. yestorday. She left the Sundridge Railway Pier at 5.45 p.m. on the 16th inst., and cleared Port Phillip Heads at 11.10 p.m.; experienced fine weather, and arrived at Hobart Town at 2.20 p.m. on the 18th inst.; left again at 6 p.m.; passed Cape Pillar at 10.30 p.m., and thence had strong south-westerly winds and heavy seas all tho way across ; passed Puysegur light at 7.30 a.m. on the 2lst inst, and arrived at the Bluff at 0.30 a.m. on the 22nd; left again at 5 p.m., and arriyed as above. We thank Mr Moore (the purser) for report and files. The barque Clara Hargreaves, with a cargo of timber from Kaipara, arrived at Port Chalmers early yesterday morning. Slia has made v. splendid passage down the coast, the run from port to port having only occupied five da3 - s and a few hours. Captain Hastings reports that he left Kaipara on the 17th instant, with light northerly winds, which prevailed until she cleared Cook's Strait; Cape Ejjmont was passed at 1 a.m. on the 19th instant, and she breasted Cape Campbell at p.m. on the same day; thence she hud variable wind down the coast. Passed Banks Peninsula on the 22nd instant, and made Otago Heads at 5 a.m yesterday. She will proceed to Dunedin to discharge, and comes consigned to Mr G. Blyth. The clipper barque Australind will sail to-day for Newcastle.

We hear with deep regret of the death of Captain Shadrach Vincent, who brought tho barque Gloucester here some six years ago. Our old friend Captain Vincent, who held-a principal share in the vessel, made two voyages to and from Hongkong to thia port, and was afterwards succeeded in the command by his brother, Captain Samuel Vincent. Both the brothers were noted for their gentlemanly demeanour, and readiness to afford every information in their power to the Press; and we are sxire that the numerous friends of both gentlemen will deplore the death of the elder brother.

The s.s. BingaroDma lofc the Port yesterday afternoon for East Coast porta. The u.s. Maori sailed yesterday evening for Timaru. The barque Eaat Lothian is advertised to leave Port Chalme.'S for Newcastle to-day. The barque Acacia, from Hobart Town, arrived off Otago Heads at noon yesterday, and was towed into port at 3.40 p.m. by the p.s. Koputai. She left Hobart Town on the evening of tho 16th inst., and experienced light variable winds for the noxt 24 hours ; cleared tho land on the 17th inst., and afterwards had the winds from W.S.W. to W.N.W. all the •way across, passing the Solanders at 5.'30 p.m. on the 21st inst.; breasted the Nuggets on the morning of the 22nd mat., had N.N.W. winds up the coast, and , arrived as above. Tho schooner Young Dick, from Hobart Town for Timaru, passed the Heads yesterday afternoon.
