SECONDARY SCHOOLS. TO THE EDITOR.
Sir,—As you have several times during this month adverted to "secondary schools,' I send you two Calendars of Wellington College which I have received from a friend. I know that the number of boys increased when Mr Kennfth Wilson, the present Principal, was appointed—in fact, it rrse from 40 to 125.^ It has now fallen to 65, and the dux of the school is a boy of about 14, although there are 12 matriculated students on the books. I cannot understand what this affiliation means, nor why, after dismissing .their whole staff on the score of economy, tbe Governors now advertise for masters ath'gher salaries; and as'l have learned from the Secretary that the modernlanguage master will only have to work from 12 to 15 hours per week, it does not seem that the greatest possible amount of work will be obtained from the new brooms. Is it not quite time. Sir, that our secondary schools were vigorously takeu in hand ?—I am, &c, A Pabent in posse.
