SALE OF RUNS.

Yesterdiy at the Waste Lands Board Office, Mr E. 13. Martin, Government auctioneer, offered the leases for 10 years of a number of runs by auelion. There was aa attendance of about 30 gdfctlemen, mainly ruuholders aud stack and station agents. Before the sale was begun, Mr Martin stated that present improvement s on the runs to be ottered would be valued one month before pns-iession to the incoming tenant was given, which would be on the lit April, 1880. The conditions of sole wera r.ad, and the auction proceeded with the following results: —

Run 421 a, Ohau district; approximate acreage, 14,000 acres; upset rental, Lloo.—Hon. Kobeit Campbell, at upset, without competition.

Run 421, Ohau district, 14,000 acres; upset, LIOO. —Hon Kobert Campbell at upaet,without competition. Hun 424, Waikaia, 11,650 acres; upset, Ll2O. —The bidding f<r thia run advanced from the uptel; pi mci pally by L 5 bids (LI bids being allowtd) till L 255 was reached, being conducted between Mr Henry Driver (for Mr J. Mackellar) and Mr D. H. Mervyn. Mr Diiver stopped at L 250, and Mr Mervyn having bid L 255, and apparently, after a pause, imagiiting that such bid was against him, advtm1 el his offer to L 260. Mr Martin knocked the run down at this price, but Mr Mervyn disputed th» Lid, and would not acknowledge it. Some little discusf ion arose, a number of gentlemen testifying that Mr Mervyn's bid was L 260, and the affair resulted in Mr Martin put irq tbe run up afresh, and refusing to accepi Mr Mervyn's bid "for the ruu in question,1' ia accordance with the option left in his hands by the terras of sAe. Mr Driver again offer .id tb.3 up et price. Mr Mervyn : "If you will take my bid Iwi 1 give you L 200." Auctioneer : " No, I wi 1 not take your bid ft r this run." It was then knocked down to Mr Driver, for Mr John Mackillar, at Ll2O, the ups-st. Run 424 a, Waikaia, Gl5O am s ; ups't, L6O. —Henry Diiver, for Joseph duke, LlO2. Mr Mervyn was the opposing bidder. Ruu 425b, Waikaia, 10,800 acras ; upsef-, Lloo.— Henry Driver, frr Joseph Clarke, L 205. Mr Mersyn was the opposing bidder. In regard t > boththe la«tmentionsd runs, Mr Driver objected to the bid of Mr Mervyn being taken, alleging that he was a defaulter, with whom the auctioneer might deal according to the condition which stated " it wi 1 be optional with the auctioneer t"> rtfu c to accept the bid of such defiiu'ittr for the inn in question." He s),id it was very hard that a bona fide bidder should be at tue mercy of one who came on pur[ 036 to run up the bidding, and who, when a lot was knocked down to him at a big price, ra fused to take it.—Mr Mervyn challenged Mr Driver to allow one of the l«ts to be knocked down to him. —Mr Martin decided that he had no power to refuse Mr Mervyn's bid, except for the run over which the dispute had arisen.
