Grey Momus was held back to make the race interesting, the pace of the others being so slow. Grey Momus fell at the last hurdle, and amid loud thouts Victor got ahead, and won easily. They paraded this afternoon under Major Lean, all the Nelson companies mustering in fall strength, After a review by Colonel Packe the jrlzts were distributed by Mrs Sutrr, the wife of the Bishop of Nelson, who addressed appropriate remarks to the prizetakers. On her plac'ng belts on the champions hearty cheers were given for each, and also for the Cup winner.* in carbine snd rifle matches, and the matvli North Island v. South. Major Baillie, on behalf of the Association, thanked Mrs Suter for her kindness in presenting the prizes, and ca'led for cheeis for her. The Bishop returned thanks for the compliment, and on conc'uding invited chsers for Colonel Packe and Majors BailJie, Lean, and Noakes, which were warmly given, also for Major Pitt. Captain Nehon thsn ascended the dais, and on behalf o£ the Association, presented Mrs Pitt with a handsome brooch, being the first bulUt fired at the meeting, mounted handsomely in gold. The presentation having been acknowledged in a speech by that lady, cheers were given for Lieutenant Pnynter, the ex-cbampiorj, and also for Mr Stevens, the secretary of tbe Association, to whom the Bishop referred in his speech, attributing the success of the meeting to his energy. The Volunteers then formed into line, and after a march past were addressed by Colonel Packe, who took occasion t) refer to their raception in Nelson, concluding by saying it was his first visit to Nelson, but he hoped frequently to visit the place again. There is a citizens' ball to be held in honour of the visitors, which will be largely attended.
