HIGH SCHOOL BOARD OF GOVERNORS.

The monthly meeting of the High School Board of Governors was held in the office of the Education Board yesterday morning, tho following members being present:—Rev. Dr Stuart (chairman), Professors ShandJ and M'Gregor, the, Hon. B. Stout, and His Worship the Mayor (H. J. 'Walter, Esq.). The Board resolved to appoint Miss Douelas as second assistant of tho Girls' High School, Several accounts were passed for payment, and the question of appointing a master for the Girls' High School was postponed to a special meeting of the Board, to be held on the 13th instant. The remainder of the buslucss transacted was of a formal character.

DUNEDIN VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE.

The annual meat ing of the Brigade was held at the Fire Brigade Station last evening. Captain Murphy occupied the chair, and 24 members were present, RESIGNATION. Mr J. L. Stewart forwarded his resignation as A fireman, which was accepted. KIiBCTION OP OFFICERS. ANNtTAL REPORT. The following is the annual report for the year ending B cember 31st, 1878, which was unanimously adopted:-- ---" Tho totil number of calls received during tbo past 12 months has been 27. Of these 3 were false alarms, 1 within the city boundary and 2 without; 5 were chimney fires, and 19 fires classed as follows:—10 of slight or trifling damage, 3 of serious or more extensive damage, and 6 resulting in total loss; of these 2 were very serious—Mr James Wilson's Water of Lelth Brewery, and the lats fire in George street od November 29th. " The calls for 1878, when compared with those of 1877, show the same result as to false alarms, an increase o( 3 in chimney fires, an increase of 1 in fires of tiifling- damage, but a decrease of 3 In fires causing seriom damage. The fire in George street, November 29th, was the largest that has occurred during the past three years. Summary of Calls.—January, 2 ; February, 2; March, nil; April, 6; May, 3; June, 2; July, 3 ; August, 3; September, nil.; October, 1; November, 3; December, 3 On Apiil 13th there were 3 calls between the hourj of seven and 10 p.m.; and on August Bth there were 2 calls between 1 a.m. and 6 35 p.m. " Between 6 a.m. and 12 noon, 5 calls; between noon and 6 p.m., 2 calls ; between 6 p.m. and 12 midnight, 10 calls; between midnight and 6 a.m., 10 cJa.

"There were i calls in South Ward, 9 in High Ward, 3 in Bell Ward, 7 in Leith Ward, 2 in Kensington, 1 in st. Kilda, and 1 in Forbury. " The average attendance at fires and alarms was 19. " Trie cost of horse hire was £63 lOa 6d, showing a decrease of £1210s from 1877, and an average of £2 8a lOd for each call-out.

" The cloth ior uniforms, helmets, &c, ordered by the City Council have arrived, and wil. be landed in a few days. " The cost for repairs to plant and uniforms amounted to £20 2* lOd.

"During the year three members have been compensated for injuries recolved at fires from the Accident and Death Fund, for which his Wbrßhip tho Mayor aud two members of tho Brigade are trußtecs " The plant at the present time in charge of the Br.'gade is a» follows:—1 7in Shand and Mason's manual engine in good order ; 1 Me try weather's sin manual engine, tho property of the Liverpool and London and Globe Insurance Company; 1 f our-wheol hook and ladder carriage, with 66ft of ladders, hojks, handpump, axes, buckets, jumping-shoet, smoke-jacket. &c. ; 1 two-wheel hook and ladder carriage, with 48ft of ladders, hooks, buckets, axes, and hand-pump; 1 four-wheel hose carriage, with slulce-valye, hydrant, and branches; 3 two-wh?el hose carriages, with hydrants, branches, &c.; 1 li ght hose-reel, with Bluicovalve, hydrant, and branches ; 2 respirators; 1 handpump ; ICOOft canvas hose, new ; 1600 ft to ISOO.t of leather hose ; 1 improved London flre-oicape, 10 pitch 49it.

"At tho recent fire in George street, five 40ft lengths of leather hose were destroyed, and others more or loss injured. "In conclusion, I trust that within the next three months the Bri^a'le will be in possesolon of new uniform?
