The result of tho election of Mayor of tho abovsnamed Borough was declared by the Returning Officer, Mr llnnkin, shortly after 0.30 last evening. The following was the result: — G. Hodges... ... ... lflo N. Moloney 92 Majority for Mr Hodges ... Vi
Mr HonoES, in returning thanks for his .reelection, stated that be viewed the result of the contest as indicating the approval of the Councils conduct in tho matter nf tramways and other works, and lie could aasure the ratstayeru that their interest* would bn at carefully attended to in the future as in the pasl\ He again thanked them for the confidence they .bail aliown in voting us they had that day. Mr Molonev considered the position he held on the poll was a triumph and could in no way bo considered a* b, defeat, as lie had been opposed by a pov;i rful clique of capitalists. However, he would not permit them to have it !.ll their own way, but would still attend to their interests as a councillor, and endeavour to prevent tho "death-warrant" of tho working men being signed, as he was afraid it would be", with the powerful influence that could be brought to bear by the capital at command.
