This contest, which we believe is the first handicap tournament that has ever taken place in. New Zealand, is creating no little stir amongst the lovers of the aucieut game. Several gentlemen have joined the Club so that they may be entitled to the privilege of taking part in it. One enthusiast lives at a distance of six miles from Dunedin, but he treats lightly the inconveniences which come in the wa? in the pursuit of his favourite pastime. The Handicap Committee held a meeting on Eriday night to classify the players who have entered ior the tourney. There are no fewer than 21 entries, and after much careful consideration they have been classified, and afterwards drawn for the first round, as follows:— FIRST CLASS. Mr Hunter plays Mr Treston Mr Robin piays Mr Bell Jttri.:Ed3ay plays Mr MNtc 1 SECOND CIiASS. Mr Mason plays Mr Staples Mr Frown plays Mr Johnst-m Mr Duthie p-'ayg Mr Eyre Mr Cowie a bye. Tn RD CLASS. Mr Bow'e plays Mr Woolf Mr Wright plays Mr Alan FOURTH CLASS. Mr Bayliss pl iy s Mr Cooper Mr Ha-.mah piays Mr Shedden It has been decided to give two prizes to each class, and the players who win the first prize in their respective classes are to play with one another (at the odds given in a previous issue) Dine game?, and the one who scores the most is to be presented with a special prize. Seeing that for the class prizes each of the players has to play nine games, there should be a marked improvement in the play of all who go through this ordeal. Two weeks is the outside limit for play in each round, and it is intended to keep strictly to the conditions of the match, in order that it may not be unnecessarily prolonged. Players will therefore do well to arrange with their opponents to commence play without delay. Any dispute that may not be met by the conditions of the match will be decided without appeal by the Match Committee.
