THE BENEVOLENT INSTITUTION CARNIVAL.

. A meeting of the Carnival Committee was held at the City Council Chambers yeaterday afternoon. The following members were pre* *>nt: —His Worship the Mayor (in the chair), Messrs Esmond, Hudson, Scoular, Murray Douglas.Beveridge, andFargie, fi™*? 0*? e?P la. ined that after voting ijWOOto tne Institution, the Carnival Executive had not until very lately received any communication from the management of the former. He had since had several conversations with Mr btrode.about investing the LISOO The Institution-had had such large calls upon its funds that it had been obliged to spend the whole of that sum, but out of the subsidy it bad received from the Government it proposed to invest LISOO. No fitting investment had as yet turned up. There was one allotment of land in Crawford street, which it was thought might be had for LIOOO, and was now yielding 1i55 a-year. He, himself, had suggested building societies as an investment, as being likely to return 9 per cent. The Mayok mentioned that the City subsHy for the half year (of L 4677) had been received on Saturday, and from the amount due the Government had deducted L1350.f0r charitable aid.

Mr Douclas read the following letter from the secretary of the Benevolent Institution :—
