(FROM OtTE. CORRESPONDENTS.) Wellington, May 17th. Rumour to-day say 3Mr Kolleston is to be Mr Cooper's successor as Under-Secretary for the Colony, hut the report requires confirmation. Mr G. S. Cooper and Mr Harman, of Messrs Harman and Stevens, Christchurch, are .appointed a Jloyal Commission to investigate the compensation claims in connection with the VVeatland Tramway Company. The Argus to-night has a strong leader on the Titanic Steel Company. It saya that the shareholders have evidently been victimised ; that neither shareholders nor directors seem to know exactly how matters stand; that an unpleasant mystery seems to surround some of the transactions; and that the commercial credit and reputation of ! Wellington demand a strict investigation regarding the position and history of the Company. Christchurch, May 17th, 7.40 p.m. Latest betting on the Grand National Handicap Steeplechase :—2 to 1 agst Tommy Dodd, 3 to 1 agst Auckland Kate, 5 to 1 agst Batcher Boy, Mousetrap, and Don Juan, 6 to 1 agst Royalty, and 7 to 1 agst Zetland.
