THE NORTH, DUNEDItf RIFLES.

Thirty-one members of this Company as- - sembled at the Anderson's Bay Kange on the 14th ult., to compete for the cups presented as prizes by their captain. Five squads mustered —viz., Nos. 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6—some of the best shots in No. 2 being unable to be present, this squad did not com«-. pete, and consequentiy No. 4 gained a bye. The firing was under 'the personal superintendence of Captain Reeves, and no match ever fired by the Company excited more intei ca1; or was more keenly contested, and, aa . will be seen by the scores, the shooting waa . highly creditable. The conditions were :—■ Ranges 200* 400, and 500 yards—five shots each range ;. no sighters; Wimbledon targets ; standing at 200 yards,' any position at. other ranges ;. the lowest score in either of competing teams to count for absentees. About 40 members of the Artillery Battery, with 2t3 of the Band, started by the' • seven o'clock train for Milton, on the 14th. ult., for the purpose of having some practica with shot and ahell. The volunteer®, met with a very cordial recejition from the= Miltonians, who turned out in large numbers. The Battery, headed by the Band, proceeded, to a paddock about four miles from Milton, and then a most enjoyable practice, including;; skirmishing drill, ensued. The weather was. lovely. Mr J. J. Atkinson, of the Commercial Hotel (the well-known Major whoI formerly \\as in command of the district).; liberally entertained, the Band, who en» livened the township of Milton, by playing; some excellent airs. We understand that this excursion of the Battery was simply aa experiment, and it was very successful. Ife. is proposed to have a general encampment of the Volunteers for three daya, at the earliest, convenient period. The Artillery Band were accorded three hearty cheers before leaving; the Milton Railway Station about six o'clock. The Voluuteers arrived in Duneiin at nina o'clock, well pleased with their day's outing. The Band marched playing from the Dunedin Station to the Octagon, where they wese dismissed. THE WAKAAI' RANGER* The Wakari Easgers fired on Saturday, the 15th ult., for the handsome Cup presented byC. Flsxnian, Esq., which was won by VoL T. Connor, beine; the third time in succession. The weather 'was fine.
